Chinese President Xi Jinping told troops to focus their “minds and energy on preparing for war” during a visit to a military base, according to a report on Wednesday.
Xi inspected a People’s Liberation Army marine corps base in Chaozhou on Tuesday and called on the forces to “maintain a state of high alert” and urged them to be “absolutely loyal, absolutely pure, and absolutely reliable,” CNN reported, citing state-run news agency Xinhua.
The Chinese leader’s visit to the military base comes amid sharp tension between Washington and Beijing over the coronavirus pandemic, trade issues and China’s crackdown on pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong.
On Monday, the White House informed Congress that it would move ahead with a deal to sell three advanced weapons systems to Taiwan, CNN reported.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian called on the US to “immediately cancel any arms sales plans to Taiwan” and cut military ties.
China insists self-governing Taiwan is part of its territory, and Xi hasn’t ruled out using force against the US ally.
The Trump administration has improved relations with Taiwan, especially amid the coronavirus pandemic, and Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar became the highest-level US official to visit in decades when he visited the island in August to discuss the virus.

I'm not so sure; in my opinion it seems like the CCP is just trying to threaten Taiwan into submission. They don't actually want to go through with an invasion.

I honestly have no idea whether this will actually lead to war or not. China's current leadership is crazy enough, that it could go any which way.

I don't think they're even sane enough to fight smart if they do get into a war. Particularly, regarding the poll at the top, if they're smart, they'll get into a war with India. India has no particular ability to push an offensive into China's most important provinces, and the USA might sit out that conflict. If they fight India, they can blood their troops and get some idea how to actually fight effectively, and see what their military really stacks up like.

Also, so long as they don't lose serious quantities of territory, they can spin the war as a win to their own people.

They don't have any ability to attack the USA in a conventional war.

Attacking Japan would be suicide; they don't have the navy to land forces effectively, and attacking Japan guarantees the US comes in as well.

Attacking Russia is the best possible result for literally every other country in the world except china and Russia. I really doubt it'll happen, but if it did, China would be able to seize large tracts of land and claim a major propaganda coup, even if the Russians manage to eventually stop them (which is entirely possible, Russia being as huge as it is).

Attacking Taiwan is fairly likely, but fairly stupid. If Trump is still in the White House, the US comes in on Taiwan's side, and the Chinese army flounders while trying to project power across the Taiwan Strait. Worse, the CCP cannot afford to lose that fight once they begin it, because trying and failing to take Taiwan would massively damage their legitimacy. More, their air force would be gutted as part of the war, and if it continues for any real duration, you'd almost certainly see USAF stealth assets systematically stripping their AA defenses, then systematically reducing their military infrastructure.

The longer it went on, the worse it would get for them, and they really do not have any ability on the horizon to actually turn the picture around for them, militarily.

On the flip side, if Biden wins the election (extremely unlikely, but the CCP might buy the polls), they might hit Taiwan expecting that Biden wouldn't have the guts to back the Taiwanese up, or at least to do it with sufficient strength fast enough to defeat their initial invasion force. And they might be right on that. Barack Obama showed exactly what a 'red line' from the Democrat Party means when it comes to warfare in other parts of the world, and there's little to no reason to think Biden would have any more spine than Obama did.

Whichever way it goes, if China starts a war, it will be the definitive end of an era. We're already in a transition phase in that regard, but China starting a war would be the moment marked down in history books as the point of no-return for a complete change in geopolitics and economics.

That's an endgame move, it would utterly wreck them. It would be one of my first targets if I was a country that china went to war with.

A singular powerful enemy like that would probably actually work to unite the US.

That's one of our problems leading to all this internal stuff. We don't have a super power directly threatening our very existence. We'd stop caring about all this nonsense that is dividing us as soon as someone like China tries to go to war with us.
