You get infected, get a minor flu, it's nothing to be concerned about, there's nothing wrong, you go about your daily life, you get over it.

And then you get reinfected.

And then you drop dead.

A one-two punch. Oh, and if you survive the second infection, you could relapse again. And again. And again. Until you're a corpse.

Every single time, your antibodies, rather than conferring immunity, actually help the virus.

That's why Wuhan looks like a post-apocalyptic hellscape right now, with doors welded shut and windows barred.

Everyone is being attacked, over and over again, by mutating, airborne, Dengue-like coronavirus.

The quarantine literally can't end. If it ends, people will go right back to getting infected and dying of pneumonia at the same rate as before.

You don’t understand how Dengue works. If you get it once, you are immune to it for life. Period. Total, complete immunity.

The problem is that there are five strains of Dengue. If you catch one of the other four strains subsequently, your antibodies snap into action to attack it—but the way it infects cells means that this actually aids the spread of the different strain in your body, producing the extreme reaction.

Coronavirii already demonstrate some of this behaviour, except it’s far less pronounced, but it’s part of why people get the cold over and over again.

In the worst case scenario all this means is that there is a possibility, and only a possibility, because the diseases are rather far apart, that anyone who had the original SARS in the early 2000s is at extremely grave risk of dying.
 
@Train Dodger your sneaking suspicion is not valid, does not match the mechanism of action you are citing, and is not cause for panic. Please calm down. The Chinese are hiding deaths... But they’re also hiding cases, lots of them, because of mild symptom self-isolating people, so the current death rate is likely an overestimate. This is not the end of the world. At its worst, at its worst, it will be another Spanish Flu.
 
@Train Dodger it’s proportionally smaller than the Spanish Flu death toll. We have a very low death toll in healthy adults which suggests, also, that cytokine storms are not common. They occur in many illnesses, by the way, and are simply more common in some. There have literally only been a few cases here and that’s not a cause for concern. You continue to believe a hypothesis over Dengue fever which doesn’t match how Dengue really works, and it’s because you are experiencing symptoms of severe clinical anxiety over the media coverage of this outbreak. You need to calm down and get perspective on the reality of this situation and move on with your life. The stress will make you less able to fight off sickness when you get it, and if you become hysterical enough to be put in a mental hospital do you really think that they will exercise appropriate quarantine measures to keep the patients, now including yourself, from getting infected? You have only yourself to harm by working up into a frenzy and imagining unsubstantiated things.

Do you have a plan to use that info productively, or are you getting yourself sick from worry about something outside of your control?
Donating some of your resources (which you mentioned that you are doing) towards researching treatments is a good step. The research you're doing is like a story you are reading - except that you are also in the story, and therefore get to help determine the outcome.
