Why are fans sometimes the worst people?

Like sometimes fans of something are the most annoying in their behaviour.

Like for instance as annoying fan behaviour:

I enjoy music of Arch Enemy quite a lot. They replaced singer Angela Gossow with Alissa White-Gluz in 2014. And the style of the band is melodic death metal sang with death growl. Mrs. Gossow retired from the singing side to the business side of the band in 2014 as she wanted to spend more time with family and less time on tours. So she made the decision of who the next singer will be and mentored them into the role. The problem here is that Angela has a very powerful and ominous sounding death growl. Alissa's death growl is milder and sometimes leaks more of her normal speech voice into it.

Basically a lot of YT music videos of Arch Enemy has the fans annoyingly complain about Alissa sucking and how Angela was better. This is annoying and disrespectful. Especially towards Angela and Alissa. Disrespectful against the former due to it disrespecting her choice of to whom to pass the torch to, and disrespectful towards the latter because she can't by a carbon copy of the former. I feel like proper mode of conduct is to accept Angela's decision and honour it, as the Death Growl Queen made her choice and who are we to protest.

So thoughts, opinions on why fans sometimes are the most annoying pricks?

Because the most fanatical fans are basically religious zealots, with what they are fans of filling the void where the god used to be.

That really isn't the case. Pretty sure people have always been tribalistic in that way, and indulging in such fanatical followings. Just look at Chariot Racing in Constantinople, and the riots that ensued between the blues and yellows (pretty sure that was the team names) which even extended to the blues and yellows being senate factions.

That too, but what Tyzuris is mentioning is the holier than thou attitude within narrow subsets of the fandom, not conflict between the tribes, but ''spiritual purity'' of the tribe. For example this is not Judas Priest vs. Iron Maiden fans clash, but Judas Priest fans fiercly denying the existance of Tim Owens era.

Selection bias. The people most likely to comment on youtube, write blogs, and go to conventions are the people who have devoted a large part of their lives to a subject. The people who devote that much time and thought might have healthy lives outside the subject... but it's more likely that this subject is the only thing in their lives that gives them anything approaching meaning. Could be science fiction, could be death metal, could be boy bands or any other kind of niche interest.

When something bad happens within the bounds of that niche interest, it feels like the end of the world to people who have that and only that hobby going for them. Probably worse than that. There's a lot of people who have niche interests because they simply never learned to deal with other people, so they never learned social skills. That means that screaming until someone else fixes the problem is the only way they've learned to deal with other people doing things they don't like.

There's plenty of other fans who just shrugged off the change or moved on to other bands. They're just the silent majority who don't get into internet slap-fights.

Why is that annoying to you? What's wrong with complaining when a product is no longer appealing to the customer? Because make no mistake; Arch Enemy (whoever they are) and their music are nothing more than products to be bought and sold, and there is no reason for the consumer to have any more (or less, to be fair) respect for them than they do the guy who cooks their burger at McDonalds. If I walk into a McDonalds, and they start trying to sell me burritos instead of burgers, I'm going to complain that this is not what I came to purchase; screw "respecting the choices" of the staff.

Personally, what annoys me are bands that drastically change their line-up, yet insist on keeping the same name. Newsflash; if you've replace the lead singer, you're not the same band anymore! Stop confusing the consumer, change the name, and I think you'll find that the backlash will be drastically reduced.

The passion is a two way street that you either get or won't get with the flow?

It's rather interesting to see an internet slap fight happen over what someone wrote for entertainment.
