happy to see you back writing this. the sergeants opinion is noted. though you do get more ability to fire behind you with the MLasers in the arm. ability to aim them higher and lower too. but you do have that right arm for that so having a dedicated shield arm is an argument.

edit: with the doctrine as it seems to be going it might be that they would prefer you lose an arm and withdraw than lose the arm and try and get stuck in with a couple medium lasers. this is a medium that costs as much as an assault if I am remembering right.
Yeah, they’re looking at that left arm as basically ablative armor. They’re planning on using aggressive torso twisting to shield the torso as best they can and using the jump jets to avoid taking hits at all when they can.

The Third Royals are basically the best-of-the-best in the Commonwealth and their commander is no joke either, so they’re being pretty smart about their planning.

Its too bad that mech mounted shields come with a movement penalty.
Totally off-topic, but I've been playing around with the idea that the Clans died in the incubator with Kerensky's kids, and instead, they embrace the philosophy of King Arthur...and return to the IS with Swords and Shields on their 'mechs! :p

Back-on-Topic:
IF you're looking for a cavalry 'mech to run raids with, you're not looking to stand around in the same place and trade shots. So a shield, or in this case an arm, makes a bit of sense.

I reckon Aldo will use the opportunity to dig his claws even deeper into him.

Third Royal Guards are the most logical ''point of entry'' for their FoundTech production and once they break the ground it may be wise to look at the rebuilding of the Fourth.

Rebuilding the 4th Royals is a big deal for several reasons. Not least of which is that you don’t want them destroyed again, so you need them to be made up of undoubtedly skilled Mechwarriors.

Those don’t grow on trees. Maybe if things turn around and the LCAF isn’t losing so many Mechs and men they can do that in a decade.

Where about on a map is Catachan?

Eddit:
I found it, let's hope that the clans overlook the system.

I don't think they'll be that lucky.

Catachan is directly in the path of the clans. It's is definitely in SLDF systems, since they visited it after the bioweapon, and everything was mothballed in expectation that the SLDF would come pick up the gear.

If they got the memo from the SLIC, then they think that there's a mothballed regiment of mechs and factories to pick up, but it will be unsafe to visit for centuries (eg, until the invasion). Or if they didn't get the memo, then they think there's a colony with mech factories there. Either way, hard to imagine the clans would skip it.

Also that's a cool map.

SLIC team died before they could find the depots and factories, so on SLDF maps it would be marked as ''here be bioweapons, avoid at all costs'', thereby the Clans will avoid it, until the Comstar points them this way. Since Comstar allied itself some time after the initial contact, the delay might mean that Catachan defenders will be better prepared to meet the threat, due to having more information, perhaps pulling something similar to Wolcott, though losing Steelton and Toland would hurt it.
