Except she's not a "tough on crime" candidate; at all. She's an "I'm going to violate your rights" candidate. You'd have to be insane to think that would win over anyone in the middle.

The plan may be to have her talk tough on the riots and that might work.
Keep in mind those middle people aren't watching the same media we consume. It's quite likely they won't even know about Kamala's shady history.

They will if BLM decides to start blasting it everywhere they have a platform, in an effort to delegitimize the Democrats' newfound position against them. In my opinion, the only thing nominating Harris as VP is going to accomplish is a deepening of the internal conflict tearing the left apart at the seams, and making it more obvious to outsiders.
Your theory seems pretty legit. And it's the way I'm hoping it plays out.

That's the plan but it's backfiring. The far left and the right are absolutely destroying her. Further quite a few far lefties are tweeting about voting Republican now. I personally think this move kills any chance Joe had. We'll see in November though.

I think she is a throw away vp.
She is to controversial to actually get anywhere. She got stomped in the primaries. She isn't supported by the new radical left base.
So they think biden will lose, they don't want to waste someone that might be useful in the future, so they give her the spot, she gets to be the first black woman vp, she can try to raise her status as much as she can, if by some anti miracle biden wins he will most likely retire or something so she as vp might end up as president, and if biden gets stomped she was kinda a liability anyway so no great loss to the party.
She has nothing to really lose and potentially might end up as president.

Seriously, nominating Harris as VP makes it so blatantly obvious that the Dems don't expect to win this election; not on the merits of their candidates at least. They're going to try to use mail-in ballots to cheat the election; and if that doesn't work, they'll just declare the whole thing illegitimate like they did the 2016 election.

I wonder how many voters were like gosh... I don't know who to choose between Biden and Trump then Kamala Harris was nominated as VP and they were like... OH WOW this settles it... I'm for Biden now! 
Like there's some huge upswell of Democratic leaning Black and Female voters who were just waiting for that Kamala Harris nomination and wouldn't of voted for Biden otherwise.
