Type 31 Frigate names announced

Ah I love the smell of missile spam in the morning
The 5 ships(well at least 5 the RN might get a few more if Parliament decides to beef up the RN's surface combant numbers which was the whole point of having the more affordable Type 31s instead of more Type 26s)of the future Type 31 class of frigates have had their names approved by the Queen and thus said names have been announced.
Collectively they will be known as the Inspiration class and draw their names from WWII RN ships and subs
The names are to be the following
HMS Active
HMS Bulldog
HMS Campbelltown
HMS Formidable
HMS Venturer
Source is bellow

The French still have thier nuclear carrier so I domt think they getting twitchy.
The French I think are also more focused on ground over navy

It was a joke.

Do know what the last Campbelltown was used for?

"Inspiration Class"? Sounds like something off of nuTrek. 😒
At least the names are solid and have proud histories albeit I'm not to happy to see the name Formidable going to such a small ship since every since the first HMS Formidable it's been a name for capital ships

You say that like people actually build capital ships these days besides 'muh aircraft carriers'. 😒

...I know carriers have their uses, but I feel they're overhyped way more than they deserve. Plus, the historian in me is still salty that we don't use battleships (or cruisers really) anymore.

Hey nuclear powered subs especially SSBNs are generally considered capital ships as are larger Amphibious Assault ships. And yeah I wish cruisers would make a comeback in navies rather than being seemingly doomed to slowly fade as a type as the Ticondergas and the ones the Russians operate are slowly retired. Well to be fair the USN really does want some new crusiers but Congress keeps not giving them the money to build them

Maybe they should stop building so many expensive destroyers and submarines then...it's not like the US doesn't already have more than enough. Probably would also help if they didn't keep treating the Russian Federation (which has its flaws, I know) like the Soviet Union 2.0. We should be focusing on China...except the establishment is busy taking their money and selling us downstream.

EDIT: I swear, given how expensive technology is getting, I've often wondered if some countries might just circle back around to cheaper, older designs with remote controls or the like when it comes to things like fighters and tanks. In essence, something of a real-life Zerg Rush approach.

We keep building the destroyers so the yards that build them will remain open and thus are available to build future designs and no we aren't building enough subs the fleet is going to shrink by around a attack dozen subs by the end of the decade albeit said numbers will recover and stay stable by the mid 2030s

Huh. The more you know....

And that's assuming things don't go horribly wrong between now and then. And given we seem to be stuck in a distorted mirror of the 1920's....

The Virginia program isn't the reason why the numbers are going down it's the gap between them and the Seawolfs and the fact that we only built 3 of them(out of an orginally planned 29 and a planned first batch of 12, which I'll note is the same thing that happened to the Zumwalts but with that class's first batch being planned to be 10 with the final numbers to be 32)which nearly drove both of our sub yards out of business and in large part can explain why the Virginia program had so many delays in the initial phases(and something similar happened with the RN and the Astutes but even worse to the extent they had to import expertise from the US to help train the workforce for the first couple subs of the class, which understandably took awhile to get done and thus were way behind schedule) . Mind you the USN is going to mitigate the attack sub number crunch by refueling the last six or so(if Congress allots the funding they plan on doing the last eight)to add another decade to their service lives(which is the most they can be extended by) members of the Las Angels class. Of course the RN does have the advantage that the budget for their future SSBN class is separate from their shipbuilding budget which sadly isn't the case for the USN although members of Congress are pushing to change this
