I've seen this floated before, and if true, it's genius. Especially since "pardon" has the implication of the person being guilty of what he/she is being pardoned of. I can't image a bigger "fuck you" to Obama than that.
As for having the Democrats meltdown, I'm not so sure - the vocal minority(?) in charge of Democrats has already been distancing themselves from him for a while - he's guilty of the "hasn't done enough" crime. It's one of the reasons Obama did a piece on radicalism on part of some Democrats and why it was bad, some time(I think it was 2 months) ago. It will help expand the cracks of Democrat Party, though.
