Tom Clancy's Elite Sqaud recently released for IoS and Android, and has already gotten into some hot water. For context, here's the opening cutscene:

Now, I personally don't have an issue with it, frankly it's about time we got a a left wing group being the bad guy, right down to them being shown as hilariously inaccurate strawman caricature version of the real thing. That said, this was clearly an accident, ubisoft was probably going for a much more generic SPECTRE type group and just had the bad luck to release the game now, right when people are primed to draw the wrong association.

and draw it they did, and then went on to whine about in the media. Ubisoft, in what it is either additionally tone deaf PR or passive aggressive trolling (given how obnoxious people have been to them about ubisoft's attempt to be apolitical in the past, I suspect the latter), Ubisoft agreed to slightly modify one element of UMBRA's imagery while leaving everything else in place and pointedly ignoring everything else the linked article was whining about.

What do you guys think?

When you dress up like generic fictional bad guys and take support from shady NGOs, don't cry when a generic-ass evil terrorist organization from a mobile game kind of looks like you.

That's... really all I have to say about it? This kind of technothriller plot is nothing new. Hell, Robert Ludlum built a career out of writing schlock like that. It only reflects reality because some scumbag organizations decided to adopt that model, and this game coincidentally came out at the same time. If it weren't this game, it would be a spy thriller published through Amazon or something else that uses the basic plot.

At first I was like... good on Ubisoft for not compromising on what's probably a shitty cash grabbing mobile game. CHANGE NOTHING FOR THE MOB.

Then I saw the trailer and was like... the whole BLM/Antifa thing seems tenuous at best. The only reason they're offended is because despite it being barely related to them, it's still too close to comfort for their sensitive sensibilities.

Also I was like... isn't this f'ing Rainbow Six?

Then towards the end and in the background images I realized it was taking characters from all of those old Ubisoft/Tom Clancy properties like Rainbow Six: Siege and Splinter Cell and The Division and was like... "Yesssssss.'

I am an absolute sucker for crossovers.

Not that I'll be buying the game anyways. Mobile filth...

Good on them on almost not compromising.

People just want things to appeal to them and nobody else.

Ubisoft: "This shadowy organization bent on world domination through the use of terrorism and murder has good PR and casts itself as fighting for equality and utopia."

Person: "So like modern protest movements?"

Ubisoft: "...Uh...shadowy organization bent on world domination through the use of terrorism and murder."

Person: "Yes, but you said two good words in there at the end they're involved with."

Ubisoft (channeling Samuel Jackson): "CONTEXT motherfucker, do you grok it!"

Also, just from a purely objective standpoint, I'd imagine it takes more than four-five months to develop and start marketing even a mobile game (probably a bunch involved there, really, with all the connection-programming and whatnot, I dunnow). When the game concept and plot was getting brainstormed, I suspect it was months before any of contemporary events were going down, and the marketing introducing the storyline is somewhat dependent upon that plot.

I was thoroughly uninterested because I am too old and fuddy-duddy to do mobile games like this at all.
But then Sam Fisher showed up, and I got to imagining that voice from the old Splinter Cell games, and now I'm disappointed and sad it's not a Splinter Cell game.

I recall Ubisoft trying to virtue signal about putting into one of the Assassin Creed games vases with inclusive artwork. I'm so happy I've never bought an Ubisoft game since that cell shaded Prince of Persia game. Back then, Ubisoft were habitually pissing on PC gamers as being entirely a group of pirates.

Tom Clancy already did that with the genocidal super-environmentalists all the way back in the original Rainbow 6 novel, though. Unless you mean specifically in the video games.

I recall Ubisoft trying to virtue signal about putting into one of the Assassin Creed games vases with inclusive artwork.

Just to clarify: that was about the "Discovery Tour" educational mode in Assassin's Creed: Odyssey. The actual vase shown in the tour was a real Greek vase from the British Museum. What they were accused of "virtue signaling" over was that in the "tour station" game environment based on the vase, the scene included NPCs of both genders. The behind-the-scenes mode for this states that this was an intentional design decision.

(Discovery Tour also censored the breasts on statues, because it was necessary for the educational mode to be PG.)

Isn't BLM & ANTIFA in both North America and Western Europe?
Quebec and the French Canadians don't give a single fuck. They have their own issues (Trying to become part of France or a french colony over being Canada/British)

Given how France is into SJWism or Identity Politics too, I think that's a risk in itself

That said, I'm guessing they dislike Comrade Trudeau

France is constantly hating itself and having riots and protests. Quebec is the red headed step child of the English and french and is not like either but like both at the same time

Well, hopefully France de-WOKE-ifies itself before Quebec ever joins it

Western Europe as far as I can tell is more vulnerable to it compared to the USA

France is and always has been a mess

I think there’s a chance their Yellowvests get extremely pissed at the PC types at some point

Kinda weird how the upper class types are to varying degrees socialist these days, a new sort of snobby classism thanks to the USSR

Sam Fisher is in seige now? How? He's like 60 years old at this point. What's his offensive ability supposed to be, forcing the enemy team not to melee him because they don't feel comfortable punching out this old man?
