That's kind of what they've always done, whenever previous generations of activists ended up creating problems that their successors always try (and fail) to "fix" a few decades later, on and on until the end of time. True, it may get harder to hide as their failures become more and more obvious, but that'll be because they get more and more catastrophic for the average person, who — even if they're intellectual know-nothings when it comes to history, economics, or public policy — will realize in their heart of hearts that something is profoundly wrong.

Right alongside future favorites like "Those weren't real lockdowns!" or "That wasn't real climate justice!", I'm guessing.
Yeah, well, I'm at the point where I wouldn't rule out the possibility that the guy carrying out those purges will be Pol Pot with the Infinity Gauntlet, rather than "only" Robespierre or Savonarola on steroids. Because if it's not the far-left militants who start a Khmer Rouge knockoff that genocides huge swaths of their own people and turns the clock back to the Stone Age, it'll be an ultra-reactionary "Führer of the West" who does. We won't like the outcome in either scenario, I fear.

We don't really get to pick the outcome.
The only way to prevent it is for the wests current establishment the left in particular to get over themselves stop stupid cultlike behavior and let the relevant people not only be kicked out of power but arrested and put into jail. This means a lot of powerful people have to go. But it is a possibility it could be done but the possibility is pretty damned slim.

We may not get to pick, but the point is that whichever faction takes power when we're old and feeble, the outcome is Pol Pot with the Infinity Gauntlet. Doesn't matter much whether it's crazed "Restore Gaia!" eco-cultists or reactionary "Modernity delenda est!" neo-fascists, because either way, you still get many millions (if not billions) of corpses and a fallout-ridden mess of unprecedented size in the aftermath.
