Seeing some of the characterless soulless 'luxury apartments' that are being constructed now, not to mention 'executive villas' (AKA Lego houses with a fancy name), this sort of building to me is ideal. Florin Court in London, the fictional home of Hercule Poirot.
Another example is the former Beresford Hotel in Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow. It was used latterly as student accomodation.
So many of the old Victorian Railway stations are long gone that it breaks my heart almost to see the fate of the one in Ayr, Scotland. At one time owned by the Stakis chain it passed through a string of owners.
This picture dates from 1962 when it was probably starting to go past its peak.
It was neglected and left to rot and ruin by a Malaysian owner who it was suspected wanted the building demolished by local authorities so he could make bank on the land for crummy flats. The adjoining railway station has had to be closed due to safety concerns. Plants are growing out the stonework among other things. It's so bad this is a picture now.

I think you might be onto something. The regime could entrench themselves in that building, waiting for reinforcements, while shooting at the enraged mob trying to hang the leadership. Who's to say the elite didn't learn from the Bastille of Paris?
