Star Trek The General Star Trek Thread - From TOS to Corporate Schenanigans

Carrot of Truth

War is Peace
Yeah. Trek is very rough.

I did think Picard Season 3 finally did it right. I honestly didn't hate Picard as a whole. Far from perfect, but a far better attempt.

Discovery became almost kind of watchable with the time jump. It could have been salvaged by moving Burnham to the background, but alas... Burnham Christ must cry every situation away.

And Lower Decks is fun, but I wish Paramount wasn't trying to suggest it actually takes place in Star Trek. Like, let it be a fun parody/tribute show.

Infinite's artwork is nice... the game is kind of "meh". It's not terrible.

They have done a good job in trying to adapt a 4x game to fit well into a defined time period. The artwork is done as a labor of love for Trek and has some fun nods that could have been ignored, like some of the Cardassian portraits have the old TNG-style uniforms.

What is more of a problem was using Stellaris as the base. Stellaris is a fun game, but given the focus on ships in Trek... it doesn't work. Space warfare is just... Stellaris, swarms of tiny ships zipping all around the system. You barely see the ships and they don't behave at all like Trek ships.

The biggest failure of Stellaris is the Pop system is absolute dogshit and needs to be axed

The full schematics for the Enterprise F are now out. And she is a beast of a ship. Long live STO.

The Almighty Connie sees all and the Almighty Connie Rules all.

I'm solid on Team Movie Era...

Refit, A and B are all the height of beauty. I don't know what it is, but the word that comes to mind of Movie-Era ship design is classy.

The D looks great too though. I also generally like the C... Ambassador-Class is underrated and I wish we saw more of them. Very nice intermediate step between the B and D.

E is... fine? Not my favorite, but it looks good. I prefer the D over E.

F hasn't wow'ed me, but it might just partly be lack of exposure. We just haven't seen it much. That MSD is beautiful, though.

(Also despite being born in 85 and the 90's-era being "my" Trek, I do still very much enjoy the OG Constitution. I think the smooth look. I can justify it in my own mind as being advanced. The more advanced looking stuff is hidden behind the minimalistic paneling and they just had a particular style at the time.)

Weirdly I am the same way. It probably part of why I like B5 and Star Wars as well.

I'm not so big on B5. I wasn't into it when it was new, so now there's zero nostalgia attached to do. B5 just looks... low budget 90's to me.

Star Wars... yes. Star Wars is interesting because I don't REALLY think it looks like "Space 70's". It's just... it's own thing. The era had obvious influences, but Star Wars is something just alien.

It's also the way I feel about 90's Trek. One of 90's Trek's strengths was that I never felt like it was "Space 90's" in it's aesthetics. It did it's own thing, created it's own look.

TOS... is pretty much "Space 60's". I think it works for me because the 60's is so far removed from my own time that it's basically alien to me, so i'm ok with it. I really, truly think that aesthetic could work today with some tweaks, but keeping it largely intact. Give the ships better lighting, a bit more texture on the hull, etc. For the interiors, more lights, small screens, keypads, etc. Change the lighting up, slightly different textures but by and large... I think you could make something VERY close to TOS and still make it work today. I always point to ENT "In a Mirror, Darkly", the scene with Phlox messing with the whateversahoosit he's trying to sabotage. It looks so good, because they kind of fused the minimal 60's looks with a more modern look "under the hood".

EDIT -

To avoid a double post, had a though added it here.

I just watched the finale of Lower Decks and... that was great. I've been iffy on Lower Decks but THIS episode is exactly what I want Lower Decks to be.

LDS has tilted too much on the wacky, zany, wannabe Rick and Morty side for me all too often. I really wanted something more like... the Orville, being a solid Star Trek show at it's core... that is also humorous.

This episode, I think better than any before it, nailed it. There weren't over the top antics. There weren't just, wacky things for the sake of being wacky. It leaned a bit on the side of humorous while also having a serious plot. Even the references weren't quite as ham fisted as usual "He looks like Tom Paris.", "I don't see it."

I want Lower Decks to keep being that.

The Prometheus was the best looking ship in Trek bar none.

latest

The dauntless looked kinda cool, too, with a properly sized arrow shaped main section out of which the main hull/necelle mounts sprouted backwards, with small necelles that were protected by the main body and with on long, silly and fragile pylons.

It looked like an actual, proper warship.

Too bad it was just an illusion.

Not a huge fan of the arrowhead ships.

Dauntless is actually a real thing now, they made it for Prodigy. Seems like Janeway as a fan of the ship and when Voyager got home, they used the data they had on it to build a for-real one.

It's not the same exact ship, it's a new ship inspired by the fake Dauntless.

They are a lot more space efficient than some of the weird things we have seen trek do.
And better weapons platforms, too, since you can maximize the number of phaser arrays and torpedo launchers pointing fotwards, and you will need the shield to cover less area.

Prodigy?

Also, Lameway doing something good...
If this is fanfiction it is better than the current crop.

Pics or GTFO.
