The funniest thing you've read in a textbook

So, I'm a history major and one of my recent textbooks is by George C. Herring.

He has the funniest description of Woodrow Wilson

"He suffered from the terrible burden of racism"

This is the most hilarious way I've ever seen someone call a historical figure racist.

He's not even wrong, Wilson's racism was a major influence on his foreign policy decisions and massively undermined what he said he set out to do lol. I just find it hilarious how he describes it like Wilson could do nothing at all to get not racist, or at least less racist.

Domestic too. He segregated the military.
You know, I would defend the dude because it's not like he was the driver there... but Versailles demonstrates quite well how stubborn he could get over things he actually cared about sooooo... Though I will note that the textbook and class cares about Domestic stuff basically as much as it directly influenced Foreign Policy so.

Anyone else have something funny they've read in a textbook?

I will always deride Wilson as one of the WORST presidents we ever had.

The doosh actively supported eugenics and forced sterilization.

EDIT: I will stop now so as not to derail.

Hmm, not really from a textbook ...

The parts of ASHRAE '89 (an engineering manual) written by Dr. Albert Black III are completely wrong. I have the misfortune of knowing him personally.

One of my colleagues once said "The best thing to happen to this company would be him leaving it."

When I was in highschool* the health textbooks included that chewing tobacco and smoking improved your health when used in moderation.

*Had to fight dinosaurs to get there.

I doubt Woodrow Wilson is at all "burdened" by your disapproval of his views on racial matters.

Funny how it's people on the Left now who feel the need to make everything all about "race".

Wilson was a leftist, in point of fact, modern leftists actually share more in common with him ideologically in many respects than they do with Democrats of the late 20th century like Kennedy or even Clinton. Wilson and early 20th century progressives were just as race obsessed as the modern left, they just had inverted values to the modern left as far as which races were important and good. Otherwise Wilson fits perfectly in with the modern progressive left: belief in technocratic expertise over populism, globalism over nationalism, a habit of weaponizing the Federal Government and its agencies against native political opposition, a belief in eugenics and being able to plan society.

In many respects, the modern progressives are the second coming of the Wilsonian Democrats, which is one of the reasons they have to so quickly disavow him for being a racist, since otherwise people would recognize the tyranny for what it is.

A geologic/seismic studies work/study book using the Lord of the Rings as the hypothetical setting for studying faulting and fracturing.

Had wonderful and hilarious place names in it, such as Gandalf's Knob.

Got a link to that?

From the little I've read, looking at the standard map of Middle-Earth gives geologists headaches.

Use's the 'Bree Quadrangle' as it's hypothetical geological setting.

Is a very fun book to look over if you are a LOTR fan, even if a lot of the jargin in it is pure seismology/geology most of the time.

Will also show you how to read earthquake readouts/labeling from the USGS and a bunch of other geologic tidbits.
