The Expanse The Expanse (Best Sci-Fi of the 2010s)

They map fairly closely to the TV show. There are some differences, such as Avasarala not appearing until the second book (that would be mid season 2), but nothing major, the TV series hits all the major plot points.

The TV series generally maps in a bit weird way to the books, end of book 1 is mid season 2, end of book 2 is mid season 3, and so on.

Yeah, but I think that's in part because they decided to show Avasarala early.

Also, IIRC the end of Season 1 has Fred Johnson broadcast that the stealth ships were built by Earth, I'm pretty sure Leviathan Wakes had it be another of Holden's "reveal the truth" broadcasts.

Personally, I'm curious to see how Season 5 ends and if they use the, heh, big event from the middle of that book as their cliffhanger. :devilish:

Ooh boy, that one's going to elicit some interesting reactions from the people who didn't read the books ;) (you know, after 8 seasons of Game of Thrones it's fun to be the one who did read the books for once).

I'm pumped for the next season.

The Expanse seems like it took the lessons of Firefly, nBSG, and nuTrek, then made something to beat all of them. I haven't read the books, but I've been spoiled on some future plot developments, and I cannot wait to see how stuff is adapted to the screen.

I also saw, in a fan interview with the Normies (a Youtube Let's Watch/React group), that this show could last a long damn time. The exact quote was "How do you feel about a Season 36?"; so the creators are definitely onboard for the long haul.

Thats not necessarily a good thing. The best shows have endings and are planned to stop at some point and running off the books has not done wonders for shows.

I expect they were exaggerating, and do think shows that go beyond about 10 years usually shit the bed. But there are a lot of rings/systems to explore and make plot in, so I could see the show running for a while.

The reason why the Expanse is so good, IMHO, is because the original creators had so much input on its direction and aesthetics. It's a very creator-driven show. No executive-meddling bullshit, just the authors' original vision. And what a vision it is! Newtonian space combat galore! Best damn show in years. (y)

I remember when I saw the Penny Arcade guys diss The Expanse's sets. They're completely off-base. The Expanse had some of the best sets and props I'd ever seen in anything, ever. The show has a very Neill Blomkamp-ish industrial aesthetic that I love, with chunky weathered metal and bold colors and stuff. It's a great-looking show. And the writing kicks ass.

I recommend The Expanse one hundred percent, if you guys haven't seen it already.

It's hard to consider it the best when its first season A) is painfully boring due to its reliance on a mystery plot, and B) is desaturated to absurd degrees in many scenes. It does pick up once they get to season 2 though.

Season 1 picks up pretty well by the escape with the Rocinante and Detective Miller carries it through the whole season.

It takes off once the conflict between Mars and Earth heats up. Before that it was cool and new but didn't really hit the heights it was capable of.

I wouldn't say its the best.

For me that title goes to Doctor Who (especially 11 and 13)

So literally the worst Doctors? (Not that Doctor Who is a masterpiece like the Expanse even at its best, more like a mildly fun and slightly embarrassing/childish low-budget romp).

Nein, the worst doctor was number 9 by far. (I grew up on 11, didn't like 12 and like 13)

10 > 12 > 13 > 9 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>13

Whats wrong with 13? (you mentioned it twice but i'm assuming the last one is meant to be 13)

I like 13's storylines and characters, along with the actual characterisation of the doctor. 12... eh, I dunno but it didn't always feel right to me. 11 was as I said, what I grew up on, weeping angels and whatnot. 10 I like some episodes but not others, 9 just isn't my thing.

So for me it'd more be 11>13>10>12>>>>>9

I've edited the list.

What's wrong? SHE'S A WOMINNNNN!!!!!

Just kidding.

But she's not a good actor and her season sucks. I'm all for a female doctor, too bad it was a missed opportunity. Missy was great by comparison IMO.

I thought her plotlines were better than 12's actually (some episodes like the one with River song excepted). Her acting is why she's taken over the soft spot I had for 10 despite his faults.
