The Southern African country of Botswana has a metal scene, which apparently isn't too metal... but looks pretty metal.

They're misunderstood.

Curtis Island, Maine used to be called Nigger Island. There's a postcard of an old-timey all-white baseball team from there taken back when baseball players didn't wear leather gloves while fielding and the concept of wearing a helmet while in the batter's box would have been met with "WTF do I need a helmet?" because Ray Chapman's death hadn't happened yet.

What does this have to do with Botswana Metal?

That they're misunderstood.

You would not expect Botswana to have a heavy metal scene in much the same way that you would not expect an all-white old-timey baseball team from a place in Maine that used to be called Nigger Island.

Anyway, there music is fucking great:
No disagreements from me in that regard, athough I think it would be better if they were more lightly dressed because thick leather and a hot muggy sunny day is not a good idea.

That's sorta like wearing my trench coat on an August afternoon: you're going to need medical attention if you aren't careful.

We are an animal, and will never be so 'civilized' that such feelings/actions are removed from our society.

Too many people like to pretend the world is nicer and cleaner than it really is, and don't like when that illusion is broken.
A lot of people don't realize just how large we are when compared to other land mammals which eat meat for lunch.

A 12yr old child easily outweighs most adult leopards by about 20lbs or more and they're still growing.

Say what you will about the US control of the Philippines but three things are certian:

- the US didn't want to be a colonial power
- WWII delayed Philippine independence
- The US and the Philippines share an Independence day: July 4th. 1776 for the US, 1946 for the Philippines.

And the Philippines has also copied from the legendary US fast food tradition ;):

not just Europeans, but also east coast Americans
my mom delt with this when she was working for the red cross. a group of feds came in to help with wild fires, she had to explain that Helena was the closest airport to the fire and it was still 6 hours away
When I was in college someone in Elizabeth City, NC called one of my colleagues and asked for a repair estimate.

Umm ... his response was "We'll call you back." because St. Louis, MO to Elizabeth City, NC is around 1,000 miles each way and you've just tied up an engineer for several days if the answer is "Yes, I'll look at that."

That's why people invented construction machinery... You know, to use less labor to get more shit done.
Americans are highly allergic to taxes, very good at taking a vacation day, and would prefer it if "work" was "somebody else's problem".

This is blatantly false right now. Especially when it's 'fer the chillin', or 'cuz duh virus', or whatever fear mongering tactic is to be used.
Hyperbole.

Americans will pay justified taxes without too much bitching. Unjustified taxes, OTOH? In 1776 King George III got a letter written by Americans and a war with Britain which dragged in France and Spain started.

Well then, put up.

If you want to practice this into "gib citation for anything on request" kind of pseudo debate assholery, i will turn it against you, and easily, because you have picked a particularly bad case to practice it on (you made an unsubstantiated assertion about current national security related manpower needs of a country not too open about that stuff and demanded "concrete statistics" from me on questioning your claim).
The US is very lax when it comes to ID requirements but likes to pretend that we're really strict. A lot of Americans don't actually have a current photo ID.

I don't.

I am actually willing to pay for getting every american citizen photo ID,

It would be cheap compared to the stupid shit we pay for already and if thats the price of secure elections then so be it.

All The States will fight you to the death over this.

A big reason for the constant fight over Voter ID is because states make a huge stack of cash off driver's licenses. If there's a national ID, a significant chunk of the urban population will quit using a driver's license and the states will lose massive amounts of money. If ID is required to vote the driver's license is obligated to be free to avoid poll taxes as the states will lose massive amounts of money.

It always comes down to money.

Sounds extremely reasonable, to be honest.

I don't.

I wonder when photo IDs historically became a thing. The mid-20th century? Or the early 20th century? Or even earlier than that?

Mid-19th century.

Thanks; very interesting!

BTW, which World War is your favorite: WWI or WWII? I mean the fighting itself; exclude the genocides and massacres that were involved in both of these World Wars for the sake of this question. (Since including them would obviously make WWI much more preferable, no doubt.)

Neither. Both were a lot of avoidable and unnecessary bloodshed.

If I have to pick a favorite it would be the Anglo-Zanzibar war. That one was over and done within less than an hour.
