Going to see this movie with some younglings. I wasn't planning onto, wasn't interested before and still not interested now even after the much better redesign, but if the trailer is any indication, the lads will find it hilarious considering how the new trailer triggered their funny bone in a manner that had rather impressed since my own reaction to said trailer was kinda... indifferent.

Then again...

Certainly didn't see that alluded to in the trailer. Maybe this film will be more interesting then I thought. ;)

Saw it... it was definitely a kids movie... and the younglings loved it. It was amusing in parts... certainly kept my interest. Jim Carrey returned to form. All of the actors did fine. Kid Sonic was ridiculously adorable. Regular Sonic was great too. I was entertained enough I could turn off my brain to all of the plot inconsistences that are typically populating all movies, especially Kids ones... so a definitely plus. All in all... not a movie I would see on my own.... but definitely wouldn't mind watching if an anklebiter wants to go.

Sadly there were no racial or homophobic slurs in the movie.... or people being spat on.

It is definitely a better film then Birds of Prey... and the plot makes more sense and the characters behave far more intelligently too.

Sequel is in the works.

This...this...a Sonic movie unironically did well and is getting a sequel? Not just a video game movie, a Sonic the Hedgehog movie. A character who has been memed half to death (without being involved in shitty game after shitty game) has a successful movie and is in with a shout of having a movie series that may be remembered more fondly than the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy.

What even is this timeline anymore?

Although Sonic games haven't done well, and it hit the polygon ceiling really hard when they tried to go 3D, Sonic tends to be surprisingly good on screen. There's been five successful Sonic cartoon series with a surprisingly large number of episodes and various premises and styles. There's been about a dozen different american comic series, with multiple manga and a stack of web series as well. The only game franchise I can think of offhand that manages to beat out Sonic for cartoon, comic, and movie tie-ins is Pokemon.

Sonic's been a joke to the gaming community for a long time but put him on screen in a cartoon or movie and he's an absolute juggernaut, that's why Sonic's continued to be a thing despite producing nothing but garbage games for decades where other, less TV-tastic game heroes are gone and forgotten.

This year has been very bizzare for better and for worse

So just saw this movie and it was fun to watch. While not as good as Pixar as adding adult humor but there is enough. Jim Carrey does a great villain.

But Sonic has the idea for game movies. Most games can be made into movies you just have to take some time and not have it be a pure cash grab.

This was overall a fun family movie that adults could enjoy too.

On the set pictures confirm Knuckles for Sonic 2 and no, he won't be portrayed by a Black Man (probably) you racists.

The studio is apparenly pursuing Jason Momoa to voice the role, who is the only person in Hollywood who can play an Ambiguously Ethnic Islander at the moment.

Trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 dropped a few days ago.

Unlike the last post I made in this thread almost a year ago, it is in fact Idris Elba who is voicing Knuckles this time around. Tails also makes an appearance.

As for a funny media take on the whole issue to shit on...

Knuckles seems suitably badass of course. Hopefully he's given better treatment then the video game series has given him since... like... for the past decade.

As I recall reading someone half-snarkily comment somewhere: "The anticipated sequel to 2020s sixth most high-grossing release, 2020s top-grossing superhero movie, and the highest-grossing video-game adaptation of all time!"

Looks like the same kind of kind'a-campy, cliche family-friendly stuff the first film was, for however much a trailer is worth judging anything on. They do seem to have gone ham on the game/universe references for the trailer though--chili dog eatin', Tails with his biplane, Sonic snowboarding, the logo itself with the twintails...A bigger sonic fan might spot more. But, that's probably nothing weird for an adaptation, just strikes me for some reason. Seems like they're intentionally packing the trailer with them? I dunnow.

By the short bit there...Not entirely sure about Idris Elba's voice on Knuckles, honestly? It's deep and villainous and I dunnow how much that works on a CGI echidna that punches stuff and will almost-inevitably become a good guy at the climax (*Elba as Shadow, if they ever get/got that far might've fit better? *shrug* This is all based off, like, one line and my own squishy feelings so)...
...But then I'm also biased because:

I've peeked-in on a handful of episodes of 'Sonic Boom', and Knuckles is pretty much great there...Though maybe that's my own dumb sense of humor, not anything to do with voice-acting. *shrug*

Still, looks like dumb fun.

Saw Sonic 2 with some younglings. It was good and entertaining, much like the first movie but not quite as good as the first movie. Main detraction (not so much for me but some of the kids) was the somewhat odd focus on some of the Human characters, especially in the latter half of the film that just kinda felt out of place. There were other scenes as well... such as one in Siberia, which looked like they'd be cringe but actually turned out pretty entertaining.

Overall the film was pretty good. Brought the same charm as the first one but just a bit more populated with other characters that in some parts, like I mentioned above, kinda made the movie a bit uneven and disjointed feeling. Not a big issue though. It was a very fun to watch movie. Plenty of laughs for all involved. And Knuckles and Tails were great. They were both just as cool as Sonic was character wise. Knuckles interplay with everyone else, being such a narrowly focused warrior echidna was great considering how different his character is from everyone elses personality wise.

I never paid attention to the video game storylines so I can't speak of out faithful it is to the actual game story though from what little I know of it, I don't think it is beyond the broad strokes. But I feel it still worked for this movie since so much of it takes place on our Earth.

Fan of the first film, you'll almost certainly enjoy the second one. Did I mentioned Knuckles is great? He was great. So many one liners. Very matter of fact. Loved the character. And Tails was sweet and adorable and just like how they brought out what a dutiful and dedicated warrior Knuckles was, they did the same with Tails cheerful, unsure, friendly sidekick and nerd persona who looks up to Sonic.

Shadow is going to be in the next one I only hope they base his character on his sa2, Heroes and Sonic 2006 era appearances where he is a introverted guy who is awkward with his emotions along with haveing a severe case of PTSD from seeing his best friend being shot dead before his eyes but given the Sega mandates I doubt it

Given how Knuckles was treated with respect, it's not entirely unthinkable they may do something similar for Shadow.
