Some critical theory scholars argue 2+2 can sometimes equal 5

I have so much to say about this but I'm so flabbergasted I don't know where to begin, so, uh, have a meme. Sums up how I'm feeling reading that.

The argument, from when there even is one, is pretty pointless as well. Essentially, it boils down to one of two things. Either redefining terms or using a different base.

One of the arguments went on for a long time, talking about how base 2 has 2=10. The problem with this is that you would have to get into some pretty weird fractions, possibly irrational numbers, in order to find a base that would force 4=5. It's not as simple as base eight either, because in base 12, numbers still equal themselves, 6=6.

Another argument was essentially that numbers are symbols and symbols are arbitrary (one actually tried to say that 2 was a variable) and so can be redefined at will.

The funniest part of all this is that it got started by an anti-woke guy using it to taunt them, and then they all came out to defend his attack automatically. They really have no idea how bad this kind of knee-jerk response makes them look. I know a lot of people have never heard of things like the 1619 project or critical theory, but even the poorest educated individuals in the US can at least count on their fingers.

Ahh so like the "free bleeding" thing.

The fact that we have to defend the statement that yes two plus two really equals four, shows how truly fucked up we are.

It makes me resent having to share a planet with these evil crazies.

Critical Theory was always going to end up at a retarded concept like that. Anything concrete, anything hierarchical, anything that isn't open to be twisted around to suit the proponents needs is anathema to critical theorists.

If it's an absolute statement describing something real then they don't like it. It's why it's so at odds with reality; there's no room for things to be true because everything must be questioned and broken down. It's pseudo-intellectuals getting high off their own farts doing the academic version of going 'what if I was actually a dream maaaaaaan'. Which would normally be harmless but these fuckwits have gotten into positions of power and government in the western world.

If you want to invent a new language where "five" actually means what we mean when we say "four," then sure, 2+2 can equal 5.

But that's no fucking answer. It's completely meaningles. I can just as easily say glorp+glorp=glibglop and that's just as valid. Which is to say, that the fundamentals don't change. This, Plus that, has a solid, objective answer. Period. Even if you make up new words for it. The underlying math is not changed.

This is the most ridiculous shit I have seen come from the left recently. I just read 1984 last month, too. This is absolutely fucking unreal. Half of me thinks these people are all in on a giant hoax...but I know they aren't.

These people really are using 1984 as a playbook. Just wow.

Unironically the point of this is the same as in 1984. It's not something you can 'beat' with logic; it's simply a way of trying to force people to accept absurd premises so they can force more absurd premises down your throat.

No matter how they try and dress it up, it's way of simply making you accept and repeat a lie without even thinking about it; not counting the numbers and pretending to see five when it's a four. No dodging the system and trying to go 'I don't really get involved'. You accept and repeat the lie, or you're the enemy.

Exactly.

The point is that they fuck with your head so much that you aren't "repeating a lie," you genuinely believe it.

Saying 2+2=5 isn't enough. You have to BELIEVE 2+2=5.

Once you believe that, the rest of the stuff falls into place.

War is peace.
Freedom is slavery.
Ignorance is strength.
