Shockingly the 2020 Republican Party had their first primary debates, hosted in the basement of the Business Insider building or something. I know what you are all thinking, how did we not know about this? I didn't even realize they were even having Republican Primary debates until after it happened.

But they did happen.

I mean sure the debates weren't even approved by the Republican Party and is basically a half hearted effort wholly sponsored by the Business Insider to host the three "main" Republican candidates in the primary besides the incumbent but shockingly, even one of those three Republican Primary candidates even declined to attend due to a scheduling conflict. Mark Sanford must be a busy guy... :sneaky:

But still, whose your guy?

I'd vote for Bill Weld if he was on the ticket. I voted for his running mate in the last presidential election. Not that I was terribly disappointed by the outcome

That's fucked up, but it's not like the GoP never fucked anyone over like that before - just look what happened to Ron Paul. Now they're just being more obvious about it. ;)
Honestly, compared to what the Democrats are doing to their candidates whom they don't want to win, I think there's something oddly respectable about just outright refusing to entertain even the notion that they're going to give these guys a fair shot. At least the Republicans are being honest.

What I’m somewhat worried about is one of these idiots getting it into their heads to run an independent campaign during the actual election.

The margins Trump won on are pretty thin, so an independent jockeying for disaffected republican votes could be the finger on the scale in Biden or Bernie’s favor.

But you also have to factor in what the Democrats have done to sabotage themselves for the past four years; I think odds are good that the margins Trump will win by this time are going to be far larger in comparison, regardless of what anyone does at this point.

Just FYI... the GOP Iowa Caucus is occurring right now!

Caca.jpg

Right now it looks like Bill Weld, Joe Walsh and Donald Trump are TIED in delegates atm... all of them with zero... but that could change at ANY MOMENT in the near future!

Or as Joe Walsh's Campaign Communications Director has stated:

Walsh Campaign said:
“There are a lot of people who don’t know a Republican caucus is happening. We expect the turnout to be low but there’s a real chance for us because of that: we have the advantage of low expectations.”

Is anyone else on the EDGE OF THEIR SEATS watching these results as they come in?

Has it ever happened that an incumbent president failed to get his party's nomination for re-election?

Well, John Tyler managed to get ejected from his party during his Presidency, but I don't know about any effort from an incumbent that failed. Pierce didn't try to run in 1856 IIRC.

Republican Iowa Caucus results came in without a hitch. Trump got all 38 delegates with a 97.1% of the votes counted. IIRC Bill Weld and Joe Walsh plugged in an admirable 1.3% and 1.1% respectively.

completely expected its very rare for people to jump ship on an incumbent president.

So Trump won by the margins usually associated with tinpot dictators? :devilish:

(Yeah, incumbents usually don't face severe challenges unless they've royally pissed off their own party, see again John Tyler getting kicked out of the Whigs during his own Presidency. Also Truman in '48 faced not one but two insurgent candidates who ran their own tickets after he was nominated... but still won the general!)
