Federal ownership of land is a legacy thing, every State after the original 13 started as a Federal territory with the vast majority of it having no private owner on record, so they were almost entirely Federally-owned by default and for whatever reason the for-private-purposes ownership wasn't transferred to the States as they formed. That vast stretch of red in the Western half of the country is overwhelmingly deserts and mountains, and what marginal farmland is there isn't competitive with the Great Plains, so there's no interest at the scale needed to make visible progress on moving it into the private market.

its still way too much state land in federal hands, like its pretty much most of nevada thats a problem.

Yeah and think of the stuff the Feds could be hiding there.

Looks like this proxy war has every possibility of pretty much wreaking Russia as an international force and now that Ukraine is making the black sea a no go zone for russian everything its excellerating.

Not just Ukraine. I wonder if Turkey is helping as well? All those Russian ships needing safety inspections before crossing the Bospherous.

its very much possible wiping Russia as a force from the board in the black sea would be a major win for the turks.

That’s all we need. The Ottoman Empire coming back. :p
Honestly speaking, the Ottoman’s (despite all their myriad issues) were pretty good at keeping a lid on the Middle East.

Maybe handing a good portion of the region to Turkey would serve as a stabilizer.

Syria is basically non-existent as a serious state, Lebanon is literally a terrorist state, and Iraq is a sick fucking joke. Jordan, Egypt, and the Saudi’s are semi stable with the occasional flare up of morons. The gulf states are built on the backs of “indentured migrant labor” and Libya has open air slave markets.

Erdogan probably can’t fuck the region up more than it already is.

eh....honestly the turks biggest historical strength is that their typically surrounded by idiots.

This has repeatedly allowed them to get gains they really shouldn't have like lets say getting all the way to vienna. When their not surrounded by idiots things tend not to go as well for them.

(Looks at the idiot controlled Western world and the equally as bad Middle East)

So we should expect ‘death to Vienna’ to start being basted by the Turkish army any day now then?

(Only half joking)

Europe basically rebuilt themselves after world war 2 on the utter lie that they had conquered history and that they were too enlightened to ever be threated by war again. So yeah the turks very well could make those kinds of gains again. If that happens thats the end of europe as an independent force in international politics it either gets shattered or Nato becomes defacto an american empire.

Eh, a resurgent neo-Ottoman Empire that is part of NATO is not a horrible thing, compared to what we've seen and are seeing out of their eastern neighbors.

If the Turks gave Constantinople back to Greece, they could have everything from Beirut to Basra with the blessing of most of the west.

Would be nice; but I suspect the only way we get Constantinople back is by force of arms.

honestly the turks played european powers against each other masterfully.

Like I said they enjoyed the benifit of being surrounded by idiots.
More like the Britsh didn't see them as great of a threat to their power and played everyone against each other.

Essentially he admits the media essentially got rid of everyone on the ground who actually knew their shit decades ago. There are a few misconceptions. Twitter isn't a media company for example it allows people to talk to others. Zeihan does have his biases but this is basically him admiting that the media in the US is basically garbage because of a host of reasons.

I don't think he likes admitting this but this is why you cant nessarly trust Zeihan on domestic stuff because garbage in garbage out.
