India and Pakistan Border Tensions/War

After the 22nd of April Terrorist Attacks perpetrated by five Muslim insurgents/terrorists in the tourist spot known as Pahalgam in the Baisaran Valley in Kashmir ended up killing twenty six people and injuring twenty more, tensions have risen between the two countries... more then usual. Most of those killed were tourists and all Hindus with the exception of one local Muslim and one Christian tourist. A Pakistan based terrorist group known as Lashkar e-Taiba claimed responsibility for the attack.

The aftermath set off a standoff between the two countries which has included the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty which supplies water to Pakistan from Indian headwaters, travel bans on many Pakistanis, closure of major border crossings and the mutual expulsion of diplomatic personnel from both countries.

Now recently there are reports of explosions in the Pakistani-administered parts of Kashmir.

Shehbaz Sharif Prime Minister of Islamic Republic of Pakistan
The cunning enemy has carried out a cowardly attack on five places in Pakistan.
Pakistan has every right to give a befitting reply to this act of war imposed by India and a befitting reply is being given.
The entire nation is with the Pakistani forces and the morale and spirit of the entire Pakistani nation is high.
The Pakistani nation and the Pakistani forces know how to deal with the enemy very well.
The enemy will never be allowed to succeed in his nefarious objectives.

Also rumors that a Pakistani JF-17 (or F-16) was downed over Pampore in Indian controlled Kashmir.

Pakistan is reported to have shot down five Indian military aircraft. At the same time, India claims that Pakistan responded with artillery fire, resulting in the deaths of three civilians. Additionally, India has also engaged in artillery fire. Indian news sites have reported that the military shot down three Pakistani planes. Both sides' propaganda machines seem to be working overtime, as each side is staring to denying the other's claims.
Sources: Reuters (for mostly objective view) , Dawn (for the Pakistani view), The Hindu (for the Indian view), The Guardian.

Just did a search for 'Rafale' on Twitter. The OSINT schizophrenia and bickering among all these new expert accounts is hilarious. India either lost one or up to five Rafales. There's been pictures of American planes, Russian Su-30's and so much more claimed as evidence. 😭

So far though it does seem like at least one Indian plane (possibly a Rafales) crashed outside one of their airbases in the area causing civilian casualties on the ground.

You think so? IMO it is more or less an ordinary Punjabi Spring

Yeah this has been a thing since the Seventh Century and in the general same area... Or post-WW2. Whatever.

Looks like Russia and China are now not only at odds over Central Asia, but this as well

I think it's time for a Russia-India-U.S. strategic axis against the Islamists and Communists.

France seems to be backing up a story that at least one Rafale has been lost during this border skirmish which means this is likely the first combat loss of a Rafale. India had around thirty six Rafales in service.

Yesterday Pakistan was claiming multiple shootdowns of Indian Rafales. Now today there are Indian claims that one Pakistani J-10 and two JF-17's were shot down by Indian air defenses after violating Indian airspace.

Looks like Jammu is under sustained drone attack

It is China work,or somebody else?
But - thanks to nukes on both sides, there would be notching serious there,i think.

India might've killed one of the terrorists who abducted and murdered Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl way back in 2002.

Jerusalem Post said:
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), India's governing party, said that the Indian army killed Pakistani terrorist Abdul Rauf Azhar in "Operation Sindhoor." A group of Islamist terrorists, including Azhar, kidnapped and murdered Pearl in 2002. The terrorist was affiliated with al-Qaeda and Jaish-e-Mohammed, an Islamist terror group that aims to separate Kashmir from India and fully incorporate it into Pakistan.

Abdul Rauf Azhar, the longtime operation head of Jaish-e-Mohammed was reportedly killed in the Operation Sindoor airstrikes. It's believed he was involved in the planning of the 1999 Hijacking of Indian Airlines Flight IC-814, the 2001 Indian Parliament Attack where fourteen people were killed, the 2016 Indian Airbase Attack where eight people were killed, as well as numerous attacks on Indian Military and Security Personnel as well as attacks on Indian diplomatic installations in Afghanistan among other terrorist acts both in Afghanistan and India, often with the cooperation of the Taliban. The entire time they seemed to operate in Pakistani-controlled Kashmir largely unhindered by Pakistani authorities.

While India is not a great country for many reasons, considering the reputation of Pakistanis in the region and abroad (especially in Anglophone countries).

If India gets all of Kashmir without triggering an Indo-Pakistani nuclear exchange I might consider celebrating.

I swear the Taliban-India-Pakistan triangle looks something out of fan-alternate-history-fiction.

To grossly oversimplify things India was a nominal supporter of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan when it was still a thing and thus implied as adversarial to the Afghan Taliban. Though keeping in mind this Kashmir Islamist group in question would've likely been hostile to India regardless, it's just that they seemingly had a good relationship with the Afghan Taliban is of general interest.

Reported maps of engagements, mostly missile and drone strikes from both sides, on May 8th. Indian drone strikes weren't quite as expansive as Pakistan's which supposedly used a lot more drones of "lower" quality. There have also been exchanges of artillery fire along the line of control between the two countries as well as smaller scale firefights. India is reporting at least ten killed including schoolchildren, from Pakistani artillery fire.

Pakistan Confirms Ceasefire Agreement with India

Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has confirmed that a ceasefire agreement with India is in effect.

India Confirms Ceasefire and Halt to Military Activity with Pakistan, Sources Say

Pak called India to request ceasefire

Pakistani DG MO called his Indian counterpart at 1535. They spoke and decided to cease all firing from land, air and sea with effect from 1700 hrs IST: FS Vikram amisri. By Nitin A. Gokhale

Abhijit Iyer-Mitra Reports:

•Confirmation from the highest sources • India has agreed to the ceasefire given that the final strikes were Indian ones on Pak airbases

• this followed a call from the Pak DGMO at 3.30pm today to his counterpart saying Pakistan would not undertake any more strikes and specifically requesting a ceasefire

• US duress of withholding IMF loans was specific - The 1 billion provisional release linked to immediate acceptance & balance subject to compliance

• the Indus water treaty suspension remains unaffected. No information will be shared with Pakistan and India will commence water projects on the 3 northern rivers

• US has accepted India's change of war doctrine. Any further terror attack will be accepted as an act of war

One of the important developments made that could have future consequences for peace is that India has changed its status of war doctrine as they previously stated where acts of terror against India will be taken by India as an act of war.
