Suggestions High Noon Thread

Just asking if the staff would be open to the idea of creating a Questionable Questing-style High Noon thread; a place where users could go to tell other users exactly what they think of them, without derailing other threads with passive-aggressive (or not so passive) sniping.

I imagine the issue would be how blunt could users be? Or how colorful? Can I say what I really really think? Or must it be kept in bounds. I wouldn't be opposed to it in principle though.

The way QQ does it, they relax their rules on civility in the thread (more so, even, than in the rest of the Rants subforum), but there is still such a thing as going too far, and anything said there must stay there; no carrying grudges to other threads and derailing them with your drama.

Basically, you can say something like this: "you are utterly incapable of arguing in good faith, and consistently act as if you hold a position of moral superiority above everyone you disagree with." But not this: "go kill yourself, you [insert racial slur here]."

We already have the Talk About Anything thread.

And these are the civility rules:
Rule 2 – Civility Rules

The purpose of this website and forum is to promote the exchange of ideas in a civil manner, upholding the value of freedom of speech. In order to fulfill this purpose certain exchanges between users which are unproductive are prohibited. In addition, material very likely to provoke such exchanges may not be posted on the boards. This includes, but is not limited to;
  • a) Racial, ethnic, religious and other slurs solely intended to demean a person for a group identity. A non-exhaustive set of examples includes “Nigger”, “Kike”, “Spic”, “Faggot”, “Slant”, etc.
  • b) Entering a thread solely to insult another poster without addressing the topic at hand.
  • c) Posting inflammatory content in an attempt to bait other users to violate the civility rules.
  • d) Coordinated efforts to overwhelm a single poster (eg ‘dogpiling’) by a group of other posters.
  • e) Accusations of being or belonging to a political extremist group or holding an extremist ideology, unless the poster self-identifies as such or can be proved to be such, with the accuser having the burden of proving their accusation.
  • f) Drastically derailing a thread from the topic established by the original poster.
  • g) Attempts to organize harassment of posters, individuals, or other websites.
  • h) Harassing behaviour toward another member.
Considering that all a High Noon thread would theoretically remove is 2b and 2c, I doubt that we would ever see any reason to create one or allow the creation of a thread for the specific purpose of insulting other users.

Frankly, so long as you don't derail a thread it is rules legal to insult other posters and call them names already. Violating 2c actually takes effort, as does insults rising to the point where we would call it a 2h violation.

Granted, if you generally act like a dick to others then whenever you do find yourself violating the rules your punishment is going to be far harsher than it would otherwise be (instead of a few days off from a thread, you may well eat a subforum ban for a few months).

But this forum doesn't exist to encourage posters to insult/attack one another. So no, no specific High Noon threads will be created. And attempting to do so will be construed as both disobeying staff directions and violating 2c and 2g as it will be seen as "Posting inflammatory content in an attempt to bait other users to violate the civility rules." and an attempt to organize harassment.

Debating buying up a subforum and calling it the thunder dome, because then you could make those rules go away and then it would be only TOS, correct?

You could do so, of course you would have to individually invite everyone that you want to have access to it. And it would cost you $220 bucks per year (or $20 per month)
