Goodreads is a cesspool

I've just finished reading a book that I quite liked. 4/5 for me. Checking out Goodreads reviews.... around 3.6/5 on average, which for Goodreads is abysmal. The review with most likes has 1 star. The explanation is 3 sentences long: basically, the protagonist is cheating on his wife, therefore the book is shit.

A flawed protagonist? Never heard of the concept. I guess if he had abs of steel and was a vampire dating another guy it would have been 4.6 instead of 3.6.

I am so fucking done with Goodreads.

When it comes to book reviews, I tend to have a look at what Amazon says. Goodreads is a little too harsh for my liking. Alas that there isn't really a good "book review" community like there is for gaming on YouTube, because it's mostly pozzed to Kingdom Come.

It's not so much harsh, as very skewed toward certain demographics. Books that don't cater to these demographics get demolished in reviews, including some books that I personally consider mind-blowing masterpieces. There's also a large woke presence in the Goodreads community that skewers things even more.

The overwhelming majority of contemporary criticism is worthless. Anyone with an impartial assessment is washed away in a tide of general consensus and "professional" critics are frequently subject to financial bias; they aren't judging a work by its merits, but by it's place relative to their paycheck.

Given that, perhaps we could do with our own book recommendation and/or review thread? Given that we seem to somewhat align on what we like on this site, I wouldn't mind getting some ideas as to what to pick up on the next kindle sale.

It couldn't hurt. I'm sure there is plenty of overlap in preferred reading material, but there is also a good possibility of obscure works that are overlooked.

An interesting idea. Would've worked better with a larger userbase though.
