Even considering Jefferson's concerns, this wasn't reparations, it was "okay, we're done with you, GTFO". Nor was Jefferson an indisputable authority on the issue (honestly, he was kind of a coward when it came to slavery's immorality, as in he recognized it but didn't want to face the controversy of being honest about it).

In contrast, we have Edward Coles, a Virginian who inherited slaves and went to the extent of moving to what became Illinois so he could free them (Virginia law at the time had restrictions on manumissions) where he bought them all farmland. That is reparations. (Coles went on to become Governor of Illinois and fight to prevent pro-slavery advocates from transforming Illinois into a slave state.)

In his second term as president, on April 11, 1865, Lincoln gave a speech in which, for the first time publicly, he promoted voting rights for blacks.

I do, however, disagree with the idea that white and black people in America can't live side-by-side, which was Jefferson's conclusion and the dominant concept behind the Colonization Society. Because we can. In certain ways, we have. It just requires constant good faith and efforts to rise up over our past and progress as a people. To do otherwise, to just declare Jefferson right, is to give up, which is not going to make things better.

If we could just do away with the identitarianism the regressive left has been pushing for decades, a lot of the animosity and lingering inequality between races could be dealt with. As it stands now though, the regressive left dominates the racial equality platform, and uses it to push for things that serve only to further divide us.
