General military questions thread

Just a question though: what are the problems the Porsche Tiger faced, and could the Germans have been able to solve the technical issues facing the Porsche Tiger?
The first problem: those were Porsche's and basically racecars.

Dad's '65 Porsche ain't leaving my sister's garage unless there is no other car available. There will be a whole shitload of complaining when it gets driven.

Mom doesn't want to see it ever again.

Uh no.
The Porsche Tiger was over complicated and tried to use a micro diesel electric engine made for Uboats. Downsized it amd had horrible issues of getting stuck the in mud. And catching fire.
The Porsche Tiger would also put your 65 to shame in that it probably had more Horsepower as well

The '65 Porshe has a 130hp air-cooled 2-liter flat-six.

More horsepower means nothing because a semi tractor has a roughly 500hp 15-liter liquid cooled V6 which doesn't need to be turned off when you aren't doing maintenece.

The point I am making is no one cares about your 65 when the tiger is bigger stronger, and more prone to fire

Do not matter? more Tigers would not save them.
You want game changer - introduce Hetzer in 1942.Somebody here wrote about that.
Or mass produce czech T.25 medium tank with reloader in 1943.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't basic literacy knowledge actually be a requirement for any low rank positions in any military? I mean, you'd probably need some knowledge of trigonometry and possibly other forms of mathematics for positions in armor and artillery, as well as in other military positions as well. I don't see high school dropouts being a good kind of soldier if they can't calculate the angle that they need to position their artillery pieces in.

Finally took a peek at the story - I missed that both HS and GED are dropped.
And a pretty low ASVAB allowed. Plus hoodlums with visible tatoos allowed. Must be desperate for bodies. But - as pointed on SB - the Army needs people to clean toilets or stock shelves in warehouses etc. too.
A sign of "go woke, go broke"? With all the queer and weirdo inclusivity, traditional sources of recruits dried up?

I mean, you dint really see any of that woke stuff in the Army.
Navy sure but not the Army.
The Army just isn't appealing anymore maybe because of A-stan pullout.

And a 50 is not a low score actually. Any worthwhile jobs have to have at least a high 60s to get.
50s get you most lower jobs, but you also HAVE to pass AIT in the job you go for.

People think you get through basic and you get your training with no issues.

I had a guy fail the first 3 of 4 he is allowed to fail in Mt AIT within the first month...

It really depends on what Rate or MOS is critically undermanned. I had an AFQT of 62. And they offered me Engineman and Hospital Corpsman. Because both rates were critically undermanned in 1990. It is why if you look at the rates of the people who entered the US Navy in 1990 you are gonna see a shit ton of ENs and HMs. Then in 1993-97 the Seabee rates became undermanned and you saw a lot of people entering as Seabees. Shoot they offered a few of us Engineman to switch Rates from EN to CM (Construction Mechanic) Because we were already working in Seabee Battlalions to help fill the stop short fall. So it all depends on the needs of the branch in question if you get offered a particular job.

Shit. Well, that makes it official. The last time we did this shit was Vietnam, and we developed such a corrupt culture that we had Russia's problem. Inventories say one thing, reality says you only have a portion of the equipment that your TO&E says you should have.

Even then we adapted heavily.
I sense a major change coming thanks to war.

It is why if you look at the rates of the people who entered the US Navy in 1790 you are gonna see a shit ton of RNs and SCs. Then in 1893-97 the Pioneer rates became undermanned and you saw a lot of people entering as Pioneers. Shoot they offered a few of us Riggers to switch Rates from RN to IM (Ironworking Mechanic) Because we were already working in Pioneer Battalions to help fill the stop short fall. So it all depends on the needs of the branch in question if you get offered a particular job.

What's the effect of that?

Not sure if this is actually a good idea:

They don't care, they only need enough warm bodies for the statistic. The higher ups believe the future is proxy wars with local forces being the ones who bleed, supported by US drones, aircraft and special forces. The fight against ISIS is their ideal campaign.

That's uplifting, I suppose. That said, though, useless warm bodies also cost the military additional money. Is the US military really sure that it wouldn't prevent to spend this money on something more productive, such as additional technological development?
