Movies Galaxy Quest 2 Good to be True?

After years of off and on rumors, Tim Allen stated there was a script for the sequel to the much beloved 1999 SciFi parody Galaxy Quest and that the script is "fabulous."

Still it seems like it could be a hard film to follow up on, especially with Alan Rickman no longer with us.

But right now it's just a script(and apparently one still featuring Rickmans character) so we'll see if the NSEA Protector will ever fly again and give a glimmer of hopw to the legions of Star Trek fans who feel their beloved Trek franchise has already plunged into parody (of the decidedly unhumorous variety).

The aspect ratio change shifting they did in Galaxy Quest remains one of *the* neatest cinematic tricks ever.

While the rest of the cast have expressed interest in doing a sequel (especially, amusing enough, Sigourney), with Alan RIckman's death... I don't think it'd be the same, unless they pull a parody of the actor replacements for shifty reasons we see in old TV shows (e.g. plastic surgery, teleportation accident, et cetera).

I just don't think it would work. It is a spoof and the movie is a bit of a cult classic while the Orville shows that a comedy trek can have legs I just don't think the demand is there.

But the main movie plot was self contained and complete. While you can expand on a movie like that with Shrek being a good example most of the time the squeals just fall flat.

Also it has been 20 years and one of the main actors died making that much harder for the writers.

I agree. Galaxy quest had a solid, self-contained story and doesn't need a sequel. Additionally it was heavily dependent on a keen mix of skilled comics, those actors are going to either be not available or aged into a different style of humor that won't have the same magic anymore.

Sigourney parodying the "attractive, eye-candy ensign/crewmember" archetype was bloody hilarious -- especially when she looked down at her cleavage being shown in her uniform and went, "Oh, come on!".

The only way this could work is if they deliberately leaned into the fact that it's been over twenty years since the last film. Focus on what that means for the characters, and don't shy away from the fact that Alan Rickman is dead; make dealing with his character's death part of the plot. Also, perhaps they could do something with a sort of Galaxy Quest: The Next Generation, and have the old cast deal with the new in hilarious fashion; show the humor in the contrast between how the original Star Trek and TNG did things.

The closing scenes of the movie already showed that a rebooted Galaxy Quest TV show happened due to the increase in popularity, though.
