That's the thing. You didn't accurately describe what the Republicans were doing. They weren't standing still, they were just walking slower. Had they actually stood still, that would have been worth something.
In fact, frequently they were walking faster than the left. Sure, they were walking towards right authoritarianism, and the left was walking towards left authoritarianism, but either way you end up with Authoritarianism.
Actually, there is a difference.
Let's say Republicans were complaining about Betty and Veronica wearing string bikinis, so DiCarlo drew them in swimsuits. Chances are, that would have been good enough.
But leftists wouldn't stop until...well, what? There is never an end to their demands.
Republicans weren't moving us to a right-wing tyranny, they stupidly moved us towards a CORPORATE tyranny. By deregulating the corporations they merged, became more powerful, until now just about everything is run by a few people- and they push leftism. This is why I get so disgusted when people say "let them drill for oil," I say "yeah, like giving the corporations what they want has ever turned out well for the rest of us, right? Who the hell do you think is pushing all of that leftist propaganda in entertainment- some teenager with a 1970s printing kit? Who do you think is shafting us at the fuel pump?"
In fact, Republicans may have pushed leftism in many things in their way. The leftism in "Dungeons and Dragons" probably kicked into high gear with the ridiculous "Satanic Panic;" with the right after them it was only natural that the people moved towards the then-"free speech" left. At my age, looking back, I honestly wonder if those so-called "conservatives" were in fact leftists doing just that with entertainment.
