Fallout Fallout General Thread - War, War Never Changes. Nor do game engines.

Isn't the point of RPGs for the ending to be based upon your choices?
3, 4 amd NV has that...1 and 2 both end the same way
That's not at all what an RPG is defined around lmao, I mean heck that makes CoD WaW an RPG because you get an alternative dialogue based on your choices. Also 1 and 2 have dozens of ending slides based on what you did.
But I guess we can all agree to disagree on this point, it'll never go anywhere.

But the ending is still the same.
You get licked out of the vault in 1 and 2 you defeat the Enclave.

3, you chose to sacrifice yourself or not, and if you save the Wasteland or not.

NV literally has 4 separate endings in which you choose a side

4 has 4 separate endings as well. That again, is better then 2.

XD Mate have you ever played a tabletop RPG? The ending is often 'you die' or 'you beat the end dungeon your DM has built for your party'. Is DnD no longer an RPG now???
Maybe HOW you beat the challenge changes, but the challenge ultimately has to be beaten or lost against.
But lets stop this debate now, it's not going to go anywhere. Just post fun Fallout stuff.

I think this debate is fun

"RPG" is a vaguely defined genre at this point, kind of always has been. A role playing game is a game, where you, play a role. It fits most games...

Fallout 4 fits the generally accepted genre. It's not a particularly deep RPG, but it's an RPG. There's adventuring/exploring, dialogue options, skill progression, relationship building, etc. That's all RPG stuff.

It's fair to say other RPG's do all of those things better but Fallout 4 does hit the criteria of RPG as generally accepted.

If you make genres have loose definitions, everything is everything. Which kinda defeats the purpose of a definition.
It's why 'action adventure' describes like 90% of modern game media, even though 'adventure' itself should be pretty strictly defined.
We really need to just raise the bar and keep it there once and for all.

Yeah the main contention was that Fallout 4 wasn't a good RPG. Only one person has been trying to state it's not an RPG at all using reasoning that might seem applicable to TTRPG inspired cRPGs perhaps twenty five years ago.

If you make genres have loose definitions, everything is everything.

Not every genre has a loose definition.

RPG's have a loose definition.

Fallout 4 IS an RPG. It's ok you if you think it isn't a good one. But something not being a good representation of a thing doesn't make it not that thing.

I think the Dallas Cowboys are a shitty football team, but they're still a football team.

RPG's absolutely didn't and should not have a loose definition though, maybe you could use the term like 'RPG-lite' mechanics, but most modern "RPG" games, aren't. X_X

Heck a lot of them aren't even terrible games, but they absolutely aren't RPG's as anyone 20 years ago would describe.

But I guess there's no point talking about this here.

What is your definition of an RPG? The fact is there IS a loose definition. Two seconds on google can confirm that.

ut an RPG with a bad combat system cough KOTOR cough is still an RPG.
. . . KotOR had a perfectly fine combat system that made perfect sense for anyone who had played Neverwinter Nights or knew that at the time the main tabletop RPG for Star Wars was d20 Star Wars. It was a standard d20 conversion that Bioware had been making for years, and it worked perfectly fine for KotOR.

Yeah KOTOR is a fine combat system, it's just tabletop rules in a pseudo live action game. Kinda like a more restrictive Morrowind. It works fine for what it is.

Just be thankful they never had the Far Cry people make Fallout....all those towers to climb.

They should've combined it with a scanning mini game. Reach the top of the tower and then be shown a map of the nearby region where you can launch drones to search for rare resources.

So a map of the Commonwealth with the obvious big points put in. Lexington, Concord, Boston. You find a pair of binoculars and can climb a high object...like the water tower near the starting point and much like in the Mad Max game, focus in on points of intrest?

Oh no something far more pedestrian...

But I mean I guess you could try to make it more enjoyable and worthwhile... But why?

RPG's absolutely didn't and should not have a loose definition though
The problem is that different developers took different ideas from different areas of prior role-playing. The Rogue-like barebones cRPG that had just enough computing resources to roll the dice gave way almost perfectly simultaneously to several very different styles.
