IF said revolt happens and IF said revolt wins. Right now they've been getting way with this stuff for at least three decades and in reality for quite a bit longer. They have every right to think that nothing will happen and that people are too distracted by a combination of drugs, sportsball and free porn. No, it's that Europe was out of gold on account of wrecking most of its industry twice so it moved to backing their currencies with US dollars, and the not-entirely-formalized nature of that arrangement led to very little incentive for the US financial system to keep reserves in proportion to that gargantuan external demand.
When European countries started trying to redeem their US dollars for gold to clean up some messes, that disjoint resulted in not being able to fulfil it, and so a spectacular time pressure ensued to cover the gaping hole before something pried the entire economic model apart from it. What filled that role was semi-formal trade obligations with major oil exporters.
Economies ultimately are just gauges of industrial/scientific output, granted modern ones fudge the numbers so comically that you can lose trillions of 'dollars' and not a single factory vanishes overnight.
Who gives a shit if they were out of 'gold', gold is just shiny metals that sits around. It's representative of wealth, it isn't wealth itself. Instead our leaders decided to print infinite fun-bux just to continue a cycle that'll crash and burn spectacularly down the line. Instead of a far more reliable and sensible option that perhaps doesn't make the upper class into glorified financial deities.
