Planning & Worldbuilding Destiny DnD Concept

So I was thinking of doing a Homebrew pseudo DnD esque game based on the universe of Destiny created by Bungie.

This concept however won't revolve around players characters being Guardians but the other factions listed in the series. The following will be playable

  • Hive
  • Vex
  • Fallen
  • Cabal
Each faction will have the class type you can pick depending on the level type the concencus of players want to start with (Ex: Tier 1 Goblin = Dreg = Psion = Acolyte/Thrall. Or Tier 2 Minotaur = Centurion = Knight = Fallen Captain)

Tier 1 can level up to tier 2 (Let's say Vex Goblin evolves into a Minotaur or that the Acolyte made enough kills to metamorphosis into a Knight or Witch), and Tier 2 can level up to Tier 3.

Each faction will have specialties then can pick one of three sub faction bonuses.

Cabal will be the "Tank" like faction so Cabal characters have more HP and DF, you can choose the sub faction (Empress Caiatl, Emperor Ghaul, Emperor Calus)

Hive will be the "Sorcerer/Paladin" like faction, they'll have Mana/Spell like abilities and have a more unique play style, like the Cabal three sub factions (Oryx, Savathun, Xivu)

Vex will be "Engineer" esque like faction, they'll have abilities that are more cool down based instead of a mama bar and they'll be a bit better in support rolls. They'll have three sub factions (Sol Divisive, Sol Collective, Sol Primeval)

Fallen will be the "Rogue" esque faction, they'll be the Jack of All trades capable of "copying" and using weaker abilities of any of the three other factions, this makes them very good generalists and will allow them a diverse set up but at the cost of being the most fragile of the factions. They'll have three sub factions (House of Rain, House of Wolves, House of Kings).

Guardians/Awoken will not be playable instead they will be one of the bosses that can appear. Generally combat will be between the factions listed here and NOT initially take place in the Sol System but rather the Cabal Homeworld.

Hmm, well Fantasy Heartbreakers have a longstanding tradition in gaming so it's worth a shot.

One issue that stands out to me in this concept is party formation. You don't really want a party of all sorcerers or all rogues. A party typically wants a mix, but the Fallen are not exactly prone to getting along with, say, the Vex so you'd need some mental gymnastics to figure out why they'd be working together, or else have to deal with an all-rogue party.

Exalted had a similar problem in that generally people wanted to mix splats but every faction hated every other faction making it really hard to justify teamups at times.

Initially the idea is Prisoners team up sort of deal.

Vex wants to get out, Hive wants to get out, "Deserter" Cabal.

Sort of a Prison of Elders scenario

Viable, but for a TTRPG I don't think it's broad enough. This is more a concept for a computer game, for an RPG the DM is going to be making up their own story which might be anything from a jailbreak to a daring robbery to a zombie apocalypse, and your job is to throw together a toolbox for them to do it, not to write the story for them.

Well tbh the idea honestly was a short story, leave room for explorers to derail because it shouldn't be too difficult to get back in tract.

I wanted to test something out but obviously this would be too much spoiler to explain more than that.

It's for funzies, consider it like a proto campaign which if succeeds will build into a better tinkered campaign.

:p

Hmm, fair enough then, that makes a bit more sense.
As DM I think I'd be maining Vex or Cabal depending on what the other players choose.

Which do you think you are picking if you'd join? I try to make the factions as interesting as possible lol

Of the factions... probably the Fallen or Vex. I have a tendency to gravitate to high-skill builds over high-power ones, which tends to steer me towards rogues.
