Oh, yeah, that's going to end well. There is no way whatsoever that this abominable project can horribly backfire and kill everyone. No way at all, sir.

Well, you know, it's just like the Time Travel advert in a Washington newspaper. "Safety not guaranteed".

Interestingly enough, based on how intelligent they are, I once discussed a plan with some friends of mine to create an elephant gun--a gun that could be operated by the trunk of an elephant--to arm elephants with so they could self-defend against poachers.

I feel... like that's not a great idea. Seems like it wouldn't really work, but if it did, you've just armed them and taught them to shoot humans. Expecting then to have the judgement to differentiate between good and bad humans is a tall order. Even hmans have problems with that.

Also, I don't think it would actually help. Elephants aren't lacking for an ability to protect themselves. Having a gun would make them lethal at range, but for that to help would require them to see the poachers before they can be shot, and then to win a gunfight with humans.

You could armor them, but that would probably cause them to overheat, and they'd probably tear it off anyways.

Not sure if trunks are equipped to aim a gun properly, even if designed for them. The book that picture comes from ("Footfall") does address some of the limitations of non bony appendages. The Fithp (space elephants) had guns, but struggled with throwing objects the way a human can.

We're talking about African poachers here, they're not exactly crack shots or going to have disciplined tactics against the elephants. Actually, we have really strong evidence that Elephants can distinguish between humans which hurt them and humans which protect or ignore them, that was one of the things which prompted the idea.

Though it then led to me thinking of a book that would tweak liberalism a bit--the sapient elephant government of east Africa working with rich white people to continue suppressing armed resistance by Black Africans to Elephant rule after a century of their being armed and then learning how to communicate.

You don't need to be a disciplined sharp shooter to take pot shots at an elephant from behind a bush. And I guarantee they'll be better shots than the elephants.

They might be able to differentiate between humans they already know, but the poachers would be strangers to them. I don't see them being able to identify a human as a poacher or not simply by looking at them. And again, if they get shot in the head without seeing them, it doesn't matter.

I wouldn't be in favor of arming elephants any more than I'd be in favor of arming children.

I do hope, Sir, you realise just how utterly tongue-in-cheek it all was...
