Ehh, floorplans of houses changed much more due to the invention of central heating and air conditioning than they did for cultural reasons. Also, realize, what rooms a house had were highly dependent on class. Most middle class homes even in the 19th century likely didn't have a parlor as a separate area of the house that could be closed off, and you can be sure lower class housing didn't. If the parent's wanted to discuss something without the kids around they would have just told them to go outside.

My house was built in the mid-19th century and it has the parlour on the southeast side and the entrance on the northwest side, opening onto the stairwell to the second story of the main house. Between the entrance to the Parlour and the Stairwell is a closed-off alcove which used to be a separate hallway; terminating in a wall, the second part of it was the coatroom and the passage into the dining room, which was rebuilt into a laundry room. This allowed someone to pass inside the house or from upstairs to downstairs on the family side of the house without going through the Parlour. There was a separate upstairs pass-thru for the servants going into the attic of the kitchen annex, which is where they slept, and then another stair went up to the attic of the main house for storage, at the servant's pitch. Beyond the Kitchen on the 1st floor was the carriage entrance, and then the servants' dining room, which opened onto the barn and onto the lean-to alongside the barn which provided covered access in winter to the outhouse. There was a servants' pitch staircase between the kitchen and the servants' dining room up to the attic of the kitchen annex, again, then being used for the servants' family.

Pretty much every religion in the world puts rules and laws and hard breaks in to their books and religious rules because other wise things can and will go horribly wrong.
