Apparently Buzzfeed News just wasn't profitable anymore so they're downsizing it into oblivion and transferring whoever isn't laid off into other bits of the Buzzfeed media group including HuffPo. CEO Jonah Peretti will oversee a single news platform in the Buzzfeed Media Group so about 180 staffers or about 15% of the workforce will have to learn to code. And these layoffs apparently affect every division within Buzzfeed.

Looking over Buzzfeed News' illustrious history, I have found exactly one news story worth of note that they seemed to break.

It was a five part Buzzfeed News Investigation on the new internment camps China had opened to house thousands of Uigher Muslims they published back in August of 2020.

Oh and this was a pretty significant moment in Buzzfeed News history as well.

"It's kinda amazing how much revenue-generating traffic the site gets from unpaid community volunteers," the former director, Matthew Perpetua, wrote in the blog post. "So, in a ruthless capitalist way, it makes sense for the company to pivot to having community users create almost all of the quizzes going forward."

In a Free Press interview, McMahon said that until she saw the blog post, she never knew that her quizzes were so wildly popular. She had never inquired with BuzzFeed about getting any payment for them, she said, and the only material goods she received from the digital media company were four $30 Amazon gift certificates, a BuzzFeed sweatshirt and T-shirt and several water bottles.

Some social media users have speculated that McMahon's web traffic was worth in excess of $1 million in ad revenue for BuzzFeed. However, A BuzzFeed spokesperson said that such figures are "wildly inaccurate."

It turned out her quizzes actually made Buzzfeed almost $4 million dollars.

You're confusing Buzzfeed and Buzzfeed News.

That's probably why Buzzfeed news was always kinda doomed to fail. Hard to be taken seriously as a news provider when your sister site of the same name is known for being a glorified social media aggregator.
