This is exciting news! A BLACK Superman!

That's right, it looks like John Henry Irons aka "Steel" is getting a serious film treatment... sorry Shaquille O'Neal. Unlike your typical Kryptonian who is basically "born" with his power, John Henry Irons forged his own destiny and becoming his own Superman via technical knowledge and engineering expertise which-

Oh sorry it's not Steel. It's an actual Superman.

Which means the Black Superman is clearly going to be Icon, the titular character from the Black owned and created Milestone Comics of which DC and Warner Media have ownership over. Now Icon's origin story is similar to Supermans except he crash landed in the American South in 1839 and-

Oh... actually it's going to be a Kryptonian character.

Which can only mean it's Val'Zod who if your not aware, was a character introduced in 2012 as a Kryptonian survivor much similar to the others of his race in surviving the explosion of their homeworld. Of course he happens to be Black-

Whoops, actually this is going to be the main Superman

Which naturally means it's going to be an actual DC originated character. So apparently Michael B. Jordan turned out to be right. Calvin Ellis aka Kalel is going to be the Black Superman, albeit one from a different DC Earth. Now some people might have problems with this because this character came out during the Obama Presidency and-

Oh... wait...

...

Oh wait, according to the rumors widely reported in entertainment media at the time they're just going to make the original Clark Kent Superman black.

You know, just once I want Hollywood to cast a black person in a traditionally not black role and have all the involved parties not turn it into a thing. Just literally "We sent out the script, this actor/actress expressed interest, he/she seemed like a good fit so we cast them."

No social issues, no throwing random "social justice" plots into the story, no behaving all "woke" for the media. Just "Yeah, Doctor Who is a women now." or "Yeah, Peter Parker is black now."

Like "Django Unchained" (inspired by the Italian movie Django)?
That was the best modern Western movie I've ever seen.

Well,if they do not made him also jewish lesbian, then they are still racists and homophobes.

Oh, if you want missed opportunities for blackening things up; Steve Rogers in Captain America.

The biggest problem with Black Superman being done for "woke" reasons is that it makes the entire idea farcical. Kinda like the idea of the X-Men being a stand in for minority discrimination. I mean the racism=power argument really falls on its face when the most powerful entity on the planet is a black dude who could casually conquer the whole place in an afternoon if he wanted to.

Ironically, the only way that the social commentary black superman story can actually work is by having Superman be much more along the lines of MLK and be actively opposed to the BLM/Malcom X vein of the narrative. Because if Superman decides that actively supporting those types of movements (or even passively supporting them) is a good idea then it opens the whole can of worms that comes with a Superman who takes the initiative (as opposed to merely maintaining the status quo).

Granted, any Superman story that really dealt with the consequences of his speed, memory, and enhanced senses being used for "good" couldn't really be a superhero story (at least not in anything like the traditional sense). I mean you think the Patriot program, spy satellites, and traditional surveillance capabilities are bad? They don't hold a candle to what Superman is casually capable of (and that totallys ignore the Fortress or Kryptonian/alien tech, or Superman actually using his brain).

I mean limitless stamina, perfect memory, and hypersonic speed means that Clark (if not a total and complete idiot) has read and memorized basically every single book on the planet. All of that data is sitting in his brain where it is being accessed and cross correlated to solve problems.

I am once again reminded of how utterly confusing and mishmashed comic universes and tie-ins and whatnot are with all the different iterations. Also how superficial Hollywood is in mining comic-dom for film ideas.

Which is a bit disappointing, because as much as you can rag on Steel, especially with the Shaq version existing...it's kind of a cool concept to have someone Superman saved turn around and in almost-Lex Luthor-ian vein make himself a supersuit (only to do good instead of fight Superman with)...Plus neat John Henry allusions and such.
Or even Icon, for that matter! As only very vaguely interested in comics ever, that's a character I'd never heard of but am immediately somewhat intrigued by and could make for a cool superhero movie if done right! You have that Wolverine-ish 'living through large stretches of history' (which are about the only things that movie did right) and fighting injustices in it...And that perhaps makes a better 'superman' superman story because maintaining any kind of positive attachment to truth and justice would be considerably harder with that background as compared to a shorter-lived one growing up on a farm semi-insulated from stuff except via history books.

Of course, seems possible this is typical rumor-milled BS that mistakes things or inserts assumptions for fact, or even some manner of marketing chicanery, and it IS one of the alt-universe or style supermans being put to film but they're doing it under the 'SUPERMAN' moniker because Hollywood wants them their money.
...
Of course, on that assumption, it looks less likely the film is being made because a black-led film isn't going to be popular in the beloved Chinese market.

My best guess is that this is just an attempt by Warner Brothers to weaponize the woke crowd against fans of Zack Snyder's Justice League movie, which turned out to be massively successful compared to the version that got released to theaters; you know, the one which the executives meddled with extensively? So yeah; once their pride is salved, and talk about Snyder making any more DC films is violently silenced, this "black Superman" movie is probably going to turn into one of those you keep hearing about that is totally going to get made someday, and yet never is.

As a black woman this ticks me off. Why can't we have our own super heroes. Why not make an Icon movie? He's an amazing character with such a unique origin and view point. Hey Hollywood are we not good enough for our own superheros?
Because the people doing this aren't interested in creating new things for this purpose - they want to subvert what already exists. Just look at how they get off on the backlash from doing stuff like this. They think it's because of racism, of course, so they get off on it. They want to destroy, not create.

What about the original Blade movie back in the 90s? (The sequels weren't as good, from what I hear, so I never bothered to watch them.)

I'd like to see a Powerman movie. Powerman is cool as fuck.

Alternatively, Super-Mimicry is just one of Kal-El's silver age grab bag of powers. He's psionically brainwashing everyone to perceive him as 'normal', which means different people won't agree on his appearance. He only dropped the disguise once in his life, as a child in Smallville to show a curious friend his true form. The friend was immediately driven completely mad, all his hair fell out from shock and he dedicated his life to destroying the alien with kryptonite-powered purple-and-green mechsuits.

Silver Age Superman is just a really kind Cthulhu.

Seems to me like the woke crowd likes to ignore that one for whatever reason.
The woke crowd likes to think they are the ones "saving" us po lil black folks. This leads to them ignoring anything that came before them That why they ignore Blade. That's also why they ignore Deep Space 9 and it's large mostly minority cast, and Voyager and it's female captain.
