After the Dominion War with the Federation being shown that their ship designs and fleet was lacking. Starfleet went into building some true Space Monsters. Behold the mighty Odyssey Class Star Cruiser. Odyssey class

latest

A Mighty class of ship the out masses and outguns anything the Federation has every fielded for war or peace. This Behemoth is the top of the line Battleship for the Federation and will lead Starfleet into the 25th Century. What are your thoughts on the new class of ship made canon.

What is it armed with? I don't see any obvious fighter bays, sensor globe towers or turbolaser turrets? At least the nacelles are marked red for explosive though, which is an improvement safety wise.

It has Multiple Photon and Quantum Torpedo Launchers. It has more Phaser Arrays than any Starfleet ships before it. And it also has a massive hanger bay that can carry runabouts, Delta Flyers, Fighters and shuttles. It also has an auxillary starship in the aft section of the ship that can assist it in battle. All in all it is a pretty powerful class of starship.

How does it match up with the other big guns? Like the Scimitar or the Dominion battleships?
Where the Enterprise E fought the Scimitar to a stand still. This ship just plain out guns it. A fight between it an a Dominion Battleship would be close but the Odyssey has the speed and tech edge over it as well.

I'm wondering if that means the Picard series will be taking other hints from STO as far as background and setting, or if it's just going to be the occasional fanservice nod and the like?

As for the Odyssey Class being canon....eh, it's alright, but I've never really liked the Odyssey-time design style, stuff like that weird hollow neck section and other features just don't look quite right for ST, the newer look STO switch to that's more inspired by the T6 Galaxy class feels like a more fitting evolution of the federation aesthetic.

We might see other designs like the Vesta Class, The Luna Class and the Exeter Class. They were around during the events of Picard.

The Vesta, yeah. But IIRC there's some kind of messy rights issue regarding the Luna, and the Exeter is just a connie skin that I don't think really exists in-universe.

I have a feeling they would want the USS Kirk to appear on the show. And it is a valid design. The Odyssey didn't exist in universe until they said make it canon. It would be an Easter egg for Trekies saying we are honoring Captain Kirk.

I wished I could remember the name of it to look it up even, but it reminds me of an mid-2000s design by an artist that went by the handle Galen online and used to do some really great designs using Illustrator. He actually used to work on the first fan series I ever did called Star Trek: Endeavour (I doubt you'll find any of it online anymore, and another fan project has that name now), but he and the other artist on the show had a falling out with me I never really understood that ended the series before its first season was even done.

Their ships weren't lacking, they just weren't built for the primary purpose of war. The Akira and Defiant were both much more optimized for combat, and were some of, if not the best ships pound for pound among the alpha quadrant.

Super-dreadnaughts have always been something of a meme-design in star trek. They look great on paper, but they generally arent worth their weight in smaller ships. The Scimitar would have been pummeled to a pile of italian bullshit by it's tonnage in Defiants, two Romulan Big D's werent confident in taking down one pre-refit galaxy and two Klingon light-cruisers despite all that enormous size, this pattern repeats itself. There is a point of diminishing returns in terms of ship-mass at a given technological level.

When the bulk and I mean bulk of your fleet are 100 year old Mirandas and 80 year old Excellsiors. You are kind of lacking fleet wise. While the Akiras adn Defiants are great ships they were far to few in number in the early half of the war. Look at the various battles in DS9. And count the number of Mirandas and Excellsiors you see vs other newer designed ships.

Edit: As to Super Dreadnought being a Meme.

This is the Enterprise F at the end of the Iconian War. You want to know what happened to her. She held the line at the Battle of Earth. When Defiants, Akiras, Sabers and Steamrunners were getting smoked right and left by the Iconians. Big E went toe to toe with them and took out a few before she was taken out of action. And considering the Tech advantage and fleet size the Iconians had that is worthy of respect.

You cant justify Beta canon to Alpha canon with Beta canon. Of course it's worth it in it's own continuity.

The Odyssey Class was Beta canon up until a few months ago. And CBS is already pulling more things from that quote unquote Beta canon. They want the Picard series to be a success and they want to make money. So the game and book series (Yes there are STO Novels out there) is being added to the Alpha canon bit by bit.
