From what I understand, it’s supposed to be a feminist movie. But they make the Barbie’s look like such colossal bitches and the Ken’s somewhat sympathetic that it kinda ends up having the reverse messaging by accident.

I haven't seen the movie, and have no interest in seeing it, especially in theaters really, but I did see the Directors other popular film, Lady Bird and it seemed to have some fairly nuanced messages instead of just hammering preaching themes into peoples brains. Definitely didn't strike me as a dumb or myopic movie.

So I'd go out on a limb and assume all of this talk about Barbie actually being an inadvertantly or involuntarily "anti-woke" movie seems likely to be reading too little (or too much into it) since it was likely an intent to depict feminism as "A Place in the Sun" for everybody, not just wahmen.

Also why is Barbie being discussed in the Disney movie thread? It was released by Warner Bros and is a Mattel property.

Young girls don't really play with that much Barbie like they did in the past. There's brand awareness but the girl toy market place is a lot more diverse. It's mostly (young) adult women and liberals or queer people I'd reckon. There's a strong nostalgia factor with Barbie just like there is with other fandom/franchise films. And maybe some families do see it especially later on. But less then you'd see for a Disney movie I reckon.

Which Disney (and Hollywood at large) is of course going to take the wrong lessons from, and assume that the reasons their movies have been failing is that they haven't been woke enough; rather than that Hollywood at large has been so obsessed with feminizing movies made for men and general audiences for years now, that female audiences have been left starved of films that were actually made from the ground up to appeal to them.
