Anyone know how to do Pixel Art?

I’m a non-artist, hell I could barely draw as a child, but I really wanna try Pixel Art to pass the time and actually create instead of consume

I got two apps, which are more or less the same one

Pixel Studio on my Mac and Pixel Art on my iPhone

My main problem is I can’t even erase mistakes or smudges, so I have to start all over again, really discourages me when I can’t even get the basics

Try a free program like GIMP, maybe? It's more general purpose and has a steep learning curve, but you can undo and redo stuff pretty much at will.

A lot of die-hard purists use Microsoft Paint, amusingly. Others use Photoshop (since everyone uses Photoshop for everything else). There were two/three other programs mentioned in Skillshare's courses, but I can't remember their names.

Skillshare Premium has some kickass pixel art courses on it -- you can get 7 days for free, so make sure you have free time in advance before you sign up. Pluralsight has one or two tutorials on it, and you can get a free trial for just those courses, if you want.

Just remember to cancel before you're charged for a month or year, unless you want to remain signed up for them to learn some really good skills you could use to freelance and make more dosh with.

If you're thinking about staying subscribed to the sites after the trial, let me know and PM me your e-mail address, so I can send referral links (Skillshare gives me Premium for a month free, and Pluralsight sends a $20.00 gift-card of some type to me if you do).

I found the eraser button

Okay, honestly, I think I can start to do this now

Well start to start trying....I kinda feel nervous because I keep putting myself down when I can’t put what’s in my mind on paper

Also, I kinda bought books on Amazon on how to do Pixel Art

Only way to get anywhere is to start. Was the same with me and my maps.

Managed to make a VERY simple robot

I am disappointed in myself because it’s so 2D or barely detailed

But it’s a start, now I want to figure out how to make Zangetsu, problem is I’m mostly very straight lines for everything, I guess I’ll figure even that out with time

Mate, I really recommend the Skillshare courses.

Most pixel artists create it "brick by brick" -- even curves.

I've started off doing Aseprite, my only problem so far is I'm pretty slow with the basics and I think I've gotten some stuff wrong

If it's not exactly as the book shows, am I making any progress or none?

Dont worry about doing bad at first, just try to practice every day and you'll make progress.

I think there's something wrong with the App I'm using, or I don't know this basic function

I'm STILL trying to do shading, I'm not sure how to get a lighter shade of grey or black just yet

But it seems when I shade/paint over the same colour, it erases or becomes something else entirely, so I have to keep redoing

Any idea on that? It's not covered in the book I bought that suggested Aseprite

Man this takes me back, I did a ton of pixel art 20-25 years ago making games for the OHRRPGCE. I don't think the program I used back then even exists anymore though.

First what are you starting out trying to draw, landscapes, or maybe individual sprites? Do you want to animate your pixel art? And how large are you going? It makes a pretty big difference if you're making icon-sized sprites vs. trying to draw a sunset.

I'm trying to learn the very basics of drawing anything, this class

"Pixel Art Master Course - Beginner to Expert/Freelancer level is about teaching people to be able to do any piece of Pixel Art starting from its very basics

ATM, my biggest struggle is making lines

That said, I wish to be able to make pixel art versions of scenes and backgrounds/areas in fiction I like. Can't do even the sprites or characters just yet

Anyone know how to fix the eraser of Aseprite? It only colors now and that function wasn’t covered in the earlier skillshare vids or the how to pixel boom I bought

I’m trying to do hues or colors now
