That tends to happen to child criminals and delinquents, which is how they got away with it for so long. If they are good citizens with good jobs likely not an issue

I think you're overestimating the crime situation. Most crime is drug related or gangs vs gangs, pretty rare normal people get caught in the middle. Sharia isn't legally binding, its at the level of a promise. They have zero legal power.
I know its popular for the hard right media to shit on everything that isn't rural America, but try not to believe everything you read.
