Stargate Through the Looking Glass and into Heaven.

ZPE is fun :) Very useful if they can get it working, a true ZPE would level the scales a little

That's exactly what Hammond is thinking and why he is willing to stomach what he sees as grave robbing and of course unraveling the mystery of why all the other Tollans look like turn of the last century farmers.

based on the wave gun calcs as I recall, though I'd expect if they tried to use it for anything other than a short bang they'd melt themselves pretty sharpish :p

On a side note someone worked out the ZPMs from space battleship Yamato can produce as much energy in a second as the sun does in six minutes.
Fairly useless fact there but certainly makes one appreciate the tech

That's probably what Ba'al was thinking when he designed his wave motion gun. "All that energy and nowhere to go but forward!"

I'd love to see where he drew his numbers from!

I know there was a lot of..."we'll just ise THIS assumption of energy expenditures."

It doesn't surprise me, this is the same story where nuclear bombs are used as flack to create shields and "im gonna drone bomb planets in another Galaxy and earth gets targeted by mistake." Are established elements of the plot.

The Yamato toonforced more than the English version did.

They'd probably end be able to use it to power their defense screens without exploding the entire ship I'd wager but being invincible for six seconds vs vaporizing 90% of the enemy fleet its a no brainer.

Amusingly Ba'al thinks if he unlocks gravity's secrets then the EM spectrum is next and if he can achieve both he can replicate the powers of the Nox.

Which he wants to do to fulfill a promise and also for purely commercial reasons because he could have been a Ferengi in another life 🤣

Edit- Carter and McCay and Nerus are all going to push Hammond to let them build one for earth.

O'Neill too

"Admiral, as a Texan you have to know you can never have too loud a speaker!"

Are they ascended? Or did they just not yet take that step? Cause some of what they achieved seems on par with the Ascended.

They're not ascended. They're well.

The Nox came into existence a second before the big bang, they're the first example of sentience period and predate the universe and the whole kit and kabootle of reality is their playground.

Some of them just fell in love with silly little mortals and their silly little evolutionary ways and would follow them around creeping on their dreams so they've invested themselves as it were in events without really wanting to change them because they enjoy not knowing what to expect.

To ascend is to come half way to their level and when Ra and his brothers killed Adria without being ascended themselves it left the Nox who bothered to focus on this, one universe rather uncertain about their personal safety for the first time since the laws of physics became a thing. So they're kinda more respectful of the Goa'uld and humanity than they would be other species.
.

This is stuff that would come up during the Atlantis spin-off but that's a ways a way so read if you dare!

For the more military savvy of my readers, I know the US military has different sorts of environmental and protective gear for various missions.

What might they use to visit this wreck of a planet? I envision the environment mostly in the early stages of an ice age, with an appreciable amount of ash and dust in the air and cold rain etc.

Heavy arctic gear mixed with MOPP gear.

Yes. I believe we have such things for extreme weather conditions.

I remember seeing them at an army surplus store a few years back. I'm just trying to remember the names and if there are newer tech.

Although O'Neill is just going to be like "too cold let's steal a bunch of crap from the lobbies of those buildings and go home and send some of the nerds and newbies out here." :ROFLMAO:

He may not be an old man anymore but he's still got the mindset.

Penny for your thoughts?
This was noting my enthusiasm on reading everything you come up with to and through the inevitable Atlantis spinoff.

What @Spartan303 said, though you might not need the arctic gear. It depends on what actual temps you're dealing with. If it's just freezing or a bit below, you can get away with basic MOPP gear and some long johns. The MOP gear is fairly heavy AND a decent insulating layer. So you've got to be careful as you can't just take off or add on layers once you're on site. They'll likely have to recon and find a suitable place to drop a decon tent that's then attached to their clear zone tent to sleep in.
Thanks! And if they wanted to establish a longer presence there, they'd have proper tents with air filtration and heating systems as well?
This makes me think they're (SGC) is going to have to build a portable structure they can dis/assemble as needed to get through the gate and provide what's needed here. At least until they can seal and decon a suitable native structure. There is equipment like this already, but I'm betting they'll want to make sure it's sufficiently robust for SGC missions. Most are going to be lightweight and flimsy.

Actually, they'll need something like this, M93A1 / M93A1P1 Fox NBC Reconnaissance Vehicle - Army Technology (army-technology.com) Just sized for Stargate use. Maybe kitbash all the testing equipment onto one of the tracked RPVs they use in the show in the short term. This is really a solid thing they'll want for a planet like this b/c it will give them greater range to explore. Honestly, if they can create a sealed environment AROUND the exit/entrance side of the other Stargate and decon it...that would make life a LOT easier. Then you don't have to hold up SGC ops in Colorado every time a suited team comes back because you have to decon EVERYTHING on the Earth side of the gate.

Well thanks!

I was thinking the temperatures right now would be analogous to Wyoming in the fall/early winter with London style rains.

So I suppose they would be using something designed to keep them warm and dry. I guess that would be standard MOPP plus rain gear?

That's a great idea, if they could fashion a pair of these guys that could fit through your average gate, it would be a hell of an asset.

As to decontamination and the like, the protocol is that anything hazardous and biological bets routed to the Abydos base first. Which is where the second half of this story is going to take place and why Hammond sent O'Neill's kid there. Old man is paranoid.

But they probably should work something out for the Abydos gate because right now they're assuming the technology around the gate itself is going to do the decontamination work.

...which might be true for the commerce oriented gates or the galaxy gates but its not necessarily the case for the gate on Abydos.

Relying on assumptions not always being the safest bet.

That would probably work. Like I said, some add'l layering under the MOPP gear would provide any extra warmth needed.
