Women in Combat Discussion

My take is that there needs to be a realistic set of standards set on both men and women that is the same, and whoever passes the standards can serve.

We had those. The problem is enforcing the rules Equally. For instance, personal experience here.

I was laid up in the hospital for a few weeks. I was put on mandatory bedrest and even hospitalized for that time. Was given a 60 day profile of no strenuous activity at all and was supposed to go on physical therapy for 30 days after that to build my strength up before resuming normal duty.

45 days in to my 60 day profile my unit commander decides to waive it. I have a PT test the next day. My units PA, PL and PSG were gone and I had no senior NCO/Officer coverage nor medical coverage so my Commander figured he Could do what the fuck he wanted and no one was going to stop him. He was right. I took the PT test and I passed. Weight and Tape, passed (skin of my teeth). The trouble is, I didn't make unit Standards of 275 on the test (think I scored a 262). Not bad for a guy who hadn't done any exercise for a month and a half. But since I didn't make unit standards I was given 24 hour notice that I would be retaking the test. I did and did better (266). Did weight and Tape again, passed better than the first. But still didn't make unit standards mainly due to the run. I was flagged and put on Remedial PT. Everyone knew it was bullshit but when you got a new hotshot CO who is all about cleaning up the unit from 'refuse' and failures there isn't anything you can do. This was humiliating for me as I consistently scored 290s and above before my injury/issue.

Compare that to a female who isn't on profile who was given more than month to prepare for a PT test. She doesn't do extra PT, diet or anything. So come the day of the PT test she bombs it, hard. Then fails weight and Tape. They give her 24 hours to retake the test. She actually does worse. Now you figure she'd be flagged, right? Nope. She's given a verbal counseling and told to prepare to retake the test next week. She fails, again. The next week same thing. No flag, no Remedial PT. No nothing. So much for our new hotshot Commander equally enforcing the rules. And it turns out she's not the only one. 3/4 of the females in the unit either failed to meet the unit standards or failed altogether. But it looks really bad on his record that 3/4s of his females are repeated PT failures. So if you guessed it got swept under the rug you'd be right. And he couldn't put them on Remedial. Unit SOP stated you could only be on Remedial PT if either flagged or self requested (which usually happened when guys were worried about an upcoming PT test), but once self-requested you stayed on it like you were flagged and only got off once you met unit standards.

Speaking of remedial PT, guess whose put in charge of it? Me. That's not supposed to happen. Unit SOPs are clear on this. Someone on Remedial is forbidden from taking charge of Soldiers on Remedial. There are some notable exceptions but that's the gist of it. About this time I was already well on the way out of the Army for other reasons but I wanted to leave on a high note. So 2 days before I got my DD 214 to final out of the service I took a self requested PT test for record. 294 in the 17 to 21 Male age bracket. I was 34 at the time and still not fully recovered (exercise having aggravated my condition). I walked away without a word, having proved my point. It only took me 3 weeks of PT like a fucking madman to get back into shape but I was livid. Rage and the desire to give your CO the metaphorical middle finger is a hell of a motivator. As for the females? If you guessed that nothing changed after I left and they were habitually failing the PT tests then you'd be right. But at that point I no longer gave a fuck.

Maybe not in infantry or specops, but going to have to disagree with you on that otherwise. Granted the AF was never as strict as the other branches (did they really have to be?), but plenty of women would have passed the PFT using the male standards, at least while I was a cadet.

if women have the right to vote then they have the responsibility to serve their country when it is at war.

The fact that they were excempt from the draft was a travesty of justice.

Being drafted sucks fighting in some god damned wasteland sucks, but the risk of being called up is the price of citazinship. If the draft is brought back it should be 50/50.
