Movies Willow The Movie (1988 Film)

Who here has seen Willow? It's my favorite film. Val Kilmer actually got married to actress Joanne Whalley (Spelling?), who played Sorsha in the same movie. Jean Marsh, a talented British actress had the role of Queen Bavmorda, one of the most charismatic villains I've ever seen on screen. It doesn't get nearly the recognition it deserves.

'Twas a decent attempt at a fantasy film. The special effects were sadly full of fail. Still, if Star Wars and LOTR had a kid together, it'd be Willow.

As far as the film I felt like Warwick as Willow just couldn't cut it as a main character. Madmartigan and Bavmorda completely steal the show from him. Granted Val Kilmer is a heck of an actor to outshine and he was given a great character to play.

One theme I rather liked was how much the film deconstructs the "Chosen One" theme. Literally everybody but Willow has a "Chosen One" style backstory, Madmartigan the greatest swordsman who ever lived with a heart of gold but betrayed by his friends, Fin Raziel the greatest sorceress who ever lived, betrayed by her friend, transformed into a opossum and out for revenge, Sorsha the abused daughter of the evil sorceress-queen who turns to the side of good, Elora Danaan the child of prophecy born with the magic mark and destined to destroy the evil queen.

And what happens?
The dwarf who aspires to one day cast actual magic winds up the one who finishes the sorceress who can dispel any magic thrown at her and destroy entire armies with a single spell. How? He uses sleight of hand, because as seen in the beginning with the High Aldwin, Nelwynn magic is mostly bull#$@# and trickery.[/quote]

You dare to diss Willow?

No, I diss Warwick as not able to hold up as a main character compared to Val Kilmer. He just didn't have the chops compared to his supporter who outshone him too much.

Yeah, Warwick went on to do some good roles later on.

Gotta love the scene when Madmartigan finally lays hands on a real sword for the first time. First half of the movie he's got nothing but sticks and rusty broken junk blades, constantly running away while insisting he's the greatest swordsman who ever lived. Then he finally lays hands on Sorsha's sword and suddenly he turns into a one-man army and Willow realizes that yeah, that wasn't just a rogue and liar making empty boasts.

General Kael wasn't a chump either, he's at least as tough as Rasputin.

Absolutely loved the movie.

Most people have the custom of dying when they take a sword through the chest. Kael doesn't hold with that custom and thinks five plus a fall off a bridge is more appropriate.

But my FAVORITE part of the movie is the duel between Fin Raziel and Queen Bavmorda.

It's interesting to me looking at it now that I know a bit about choreography, that they did a great job of selling Kael despite the fact that the actor can't fight worth spit. I didn't notice it when I was younger watching the movie, but literally almost all his scenes consist of him pulling his sword out of a guy he just killed without showing him flailing around first, it just cuts to Kael and yeah, there's another corpse at his feet and he's pulling his sword out. He moves at old-man speed but the expert framing of it makes him look like an unstoppable badass with super-strength instead.

He sure as shit did. I remember when I first watched the movie as a boy and bei absolutely terrified of how unstoppable he looked.

That was good work on their part.

One of greatest fantasy movies i ever saw.Special effects were sometimes silly, but otherwise - excellent.
Why now, with more money and special effects capable of everything, people could not made such movies ?

I certainly don't want a remake.
How about a sequel?
Here's hoping they don't take inspiration from that terrible Chronicles of the Shadow War series of books by Chris Claremont; the ones that open with killing off most of the movie's cast, and has Willow abandon his family.

I've completely lost faith in Hollywood to produce something good and not political. I now expect every movie to suck and be woke and If its not and actually good, then so much the better.
