It would be an interesting power struggle on the Taiwan, the knives would be out amongst the leadership without Chiang keeping them down.
They would not fall - but whoever would win,probable would declare indepent country.Just to made less problem for himself/no need to stomp on locals

As long as Mao lived,he could even recognize it - he was commie,not nationalist.
Chiang always said he needed to talk about taking back the mainland to 'keep up morale'. Would Nationalist who declares an independent country keep up morale and support among the mainland refugee officials and troops, the people with the political connections and the guns on the island? Could an independence declaration prompt any to decide "better Red than not Chinese"?
You figure Mao at this point prefers a refugee regime that claims independence, even though that technically "divides China" over one that claims to be China because it means he gets China's UN seat, embassies around the globe and doesn't need to worry about a Nationalist re-invasion attempt?
