WI Chiang was captured/killed when he last based in the mainland (Sichuan '49)?

What would happen to Nationalists on Taiwan?

  • a) They would fall to communists by combo of collapse/surrender/conquest

    Votes: 2 50.0%
  • b) They would survive under alternative Nationalist leader claiming Rep of China mantle

    Votes: 1 25.0%
  • Taiwan would be proclaimed an independent country by KMT officers, other locals, the US, or UN

It would be an interesting power struggle on the Taiwan, the knives would be out amongst the leadership without Chiang keeping them down.

They would not fall - but whoever would win, probable would declare indepent country.Just to made less problem for himself/no need to stomp on locals, and Mao have less reasons to invade/
As long as Mao lived,he could even recognize it - he was commie, not nationalist.

I imagine the knives would be out first for each leaders own survival. Would any turn coat toward the Communist to ge a eg up on his rivals or save himself from rivals? Or is keeping the Communists out a 'rule of the game' all competing factions and the ultimate winner on the island plays by?

Chiang always said he needed to talk about taking back the mainland to 'keep up morale'. Would Nationalist who declares an independent country keep up morale and support among the mainland refugee officials and troops, the people with the political connections and the guns on the island? Could an independence declaration prompt any to decide "better Red than not Chinese"?

You figure Mao at this point prefers a refugee regime that claims independence, even though that technically "divides China" over one that claims to be China because it means he gets China's UN seat, embassies around the globe and doesn't need to worry about a Nationalist re-invasion attempt?

1.some KMT on Taiwan could betray and beg Mao for help. But if it not worked...
2.Mao would be happy to recognize Taiwan for UN seat, becouse he was commie. When socialists from Japan try beg forgiving for japaneese crimes,/real one/ he stopped them and said it was OK,becouse thanks to that he manage to get power.
