Why do so many people have the belief that a man's "physical and athletic prime is in his mid-30's"?

Reading this article. I agreed with most in it. But let's read these two paragraphs below in italic:

"People reach a peak in most sporting events in their mid-30s," says Stephen Harridge, professor of human and applied physiology at King's College London. Harridge, 56, a former 400-metre hurdles runner, specialises in ageing. You then enter a "progressive decline in performance" that remains steady until your 70s (don't ask).

Measuring this decline can be tricky. Maximum heart rates are an indicator (they fall). So are 100-metre sprint times in masters and senior races. "During the 40s we see about a 0.6-second decline in men's and women's times," Harridge says. A combination of small changes, including drops in muscle mass, aerobic capacity and neuromuscular control – the way the brain conducts our muscles – add up to a drop in what is possible. In people like me, abused knees, creaky backs, feeble cores and neglected niggles can further limit performance.

___________

The first paragraph is blatantly false. The physical and athletic prime of men is between the ages of 16 through 24. The 16 point being where most boys have already finished going through puberty and are, on height and bone structure robustness, their adult size and with very high testosterone to boot. and the ability to heal is at it's highest at this point. explosive speed and power especially is at it's highest at this point. durability is at it's highest at this point. aerobic capacity, if trained properly, is highest at these ages as well. and seems to last until roughly the age of 24 where, after that, there is a decline with every passing year.

of course, performance enhancing drugs can extend this physical prime; but I don't consider PEDs when talking about the natural way the body is supposed to work. professional athletes are on so many PEDs it scues the general public's perspective on what is natural and what is lab made. but looking at amateur athletes and men throughout the population, everyone should be able to agree that 16, 17 and 18 year old athletes in high school, for instance - or even non athletes - are way more athletic and nimble at that point in their lives...than they are when they are in even their mid to late twenties let alone thirties...don't let those thirty something crossfit or gym bros with their beach muscles fool you, that is not athleticism but vanity.

Athletic prime is between the ages of 16 and 24 - corresponding with the point a boy has gone through puberty and become a man on bone structure and testosterone - around 16 for most - and ending in his mid twenties with a general decline in vigor, explosive speed and power, and ability to recover with every passing year

I'd find your argument *potentially* convincing if you provided actual citations rather than just your say-so.
