What If? What if the US government Official sent a mercenary to Kill the Joker or send him to federal prison?

We know batman for whatever reason however impratical will not kill the joker, however if the US government decided to hired deathstroke, deadshot, or even Lobo to either kill the joker outright or even capture him so that Joker can be tried outside of gotham and sent to good ol fashion "don't drop the soap." Federal prison (Where let's face it, joker would last a week max) would batman still try to stop the merc so he can bring the joker to justice "the right way" or would he simply walk away and say "Hey If this is federal business don't let me stop you." followed by a pouring of the bubbly while celebrating the soon inevitable end of the greatest thorn in his side.

Frankly I can sadly see both scenarios occurring depending on how you write Batman. Frankly if it were me I'd simply let the bounty hunter go on his merry way or even offer to help, followed by celebrating. Then again, I would have killed the Joker after the first three 9/11 esque massacres he caused even if it meant I needed to retire from the batman role for a bit.

From a Doylist perspective there's a 0% chance of Batman ignoring said mercenary or letting him get the Joker without a fight. Fans do not buy comics with Batman and Lobo on the cover in order to see said pair shake hands cordially and move on without a fight. There's a reason it's a cliche that anytime two heroes meet for the first time (and often other times) in a comic, they'll somehow wind up fighting.

Ignoring doylist considering that's the only reason joker is not dead already.

Meh, you need to specify which Batman in that case. Adam West Batman is going to behave very differently from Nolanverse Batman.

Ones I suspect would let the Joker be captured:
Nolanverse
Young Justice
Possibly The Animated Series

Ones that would likely protect the Joker:
Most of the dumber comic versions, of which there are many.
Adam West
The Batman

Honorable mention to Burton's Batman (1989 movie), who would hand Deadshot the bullet if he hadn't already killed Joker himself, being one of the few Batman incarnations happy to use lethal force.

The Joker may somehow take over said Federal Prison or slaughter or manipulate the inmates

I’d suggest NOT allowing him to have say, a glass of water, or anything he could remotely use as a weapon including say...cotton budds and clothing

I’d have him under surveillance like All-For-One and barely mobile

And that’s not accounting for if the Joker’s got “fans” who try busting him out

When Gods, Cthulu, Doomsday and even the Specter have all met with rather unpleasant evenings after running into the Joker.

He once Jokerized Doomsday with stuff he bought at a K-mart and even Poison Ivy and Rhas Ghul have had trouble finding cures to his chemical weapons. If I hazarded a guess, the reason the Wall doesn't just kill him is for that reason, he's too dangerous for a mere assassin.

Maybe they should give up trying to “rehabilitate” him then

Even if “cured” its practically fate for him to become the Joker again

Just point the Punisher in the Joker's way. Although that one time he was on his tail, Batman intervened to save his one true love.

Honestly, I wonder how Bats would feel about the government giving a Dead-Or-Alive Bounty, preferably DEAD Bounty, or maybe just the death penalty

Perhaps saying his mom’s Martha would help

It works if you treat Batman and his top tier rogues Gallery members as threats on the same level as Luthor or Brainiac or Darkseid's avatars. Which they are, but pretending they're just regular criminals and Bats is just another vigilante is what makes a lot of us roll our eyes.

oh but if they were treated like that, then gotham and comisioner gordon would be considered a waste of ink, and said rouges have to actually be dealt with.

Or they could just, keep Joker and Rhas as Justice League villains, in Batman centered League stories. And let Bats play with the rest of them.

that works, maybe i'm in the minority when they keep doing stuff like stick to the status quo they don't make Batman look on the edge or tough as nails, they just make him and everyone in Gotham look incompetent. I don't get why they don't pull a real life insperation and do colimbine like imitators if they want to always have a joker around. Heck you could make references to the films about all of the different jokers, each with thier own ways of commiting crimes. Does anybody really care if Joker is Jack naiper, jon doe or the devil himself?

You can do all kinds of stuff. The problem is the structure of comics, they're never going to end, there's no final arc, and the next person they bring in to write it might well undo everything you wrote.

In a way, I think Pulp does this “never end” or “no Final Arc” thing much better
