My wife and I just started a game of Across Five Aprils. It's an old Avalon Hill boardgame covering the US Civil War.

Opening setup is complete ... with a twist. We're using the randomized generals variant including the ones you start with.

Generals have 1, 2, or 3 stars (4 max in the case of Grant and Sherman) indicating the what they're qualified to command. Some (like Sherman) start at 1 and get promoted after a battle they survive unscathed. Others (like Lee) start and stay at 3-stars.

They also have a 3 number rating indicating initiative, army command skill, and tactical skill. (3,0,0) is considered "good" and (3,-1,0) is tolerable for a 3-star.

We're also using the variant which allows Nathaniel Lyon and Stonewall Jackson to be promoted to 3 stars and command an army if they survive. That gives both sides an extra army commander just as good as Grant or Sherman (2,2,2) and almost as good as Lee (2,3,1).

She's playing the Confederates. I placed her generals and know what she's got: Lee, both Johnstons, EK Smith, and Jackson right from the start while Van Dorn (the worst Confederate general in the game) is the last one she gets.

I don't yet know which generals the Union starts with or which ones show up when, but if her shit eating grin is any indication the Union is in for a very rough time.

We've played before. I have pretty good idea of what she's going to do early. She'll make a play for Missouri and West Virginia while leaving Kentucky alone. Instead of going after Kentucky and DC she's going to fortify Richmond, Chattanooga, Memphis, and New Orleans ASAP with one fortress left unbuilt (she only gets five).

For me to win I will have to use the Navy to hit the South in coastal and riverine places she's not adaquately defending while the big Armies with shit commanders take a beating until I start to get the good Union commanders into play.

I just started playing Mechwarrior 5, and if it wasn't for my love for the setting I'd put it squarely in the 'Meh' - category. The missions feel small and uninspired so far, and the graphics could as well have been from a game published in 2014. I got some visual and environmental mods, but it's still a far shot away from some of the immersive environments that titles like Fallout New Vegas have been using for half a decade or longer by now. Enemy mechs more often than not have really dark color schemes that make them all homogenous, and at least so far I haven't really seen any distinct color schemes that vary between factions. What little I've done from the campaign also is decidedly uninspired. Worse, I think if it wasn't for the mods on Nexus I probably would have uninstalled the game after less than 4 hours playtime. Definately not something to buy at full price.

That's a shame. Especially the "Enemies have limited color-scheme" part. I get that they are a military thing, but you'd assume that plenty of mechwarriors have swagger and arrogance in spades, thus chose to paint their mech some bright color. I know I would.

It's a shame. There's so much you can do with the setting and lore. Vast quantities of individual diversity in the most positive way, different architectural styles, worlds, climates, gravities (!), weather systems. You'll find glimpses of that here and then in the game, and some mods help to partially remedy some weaknesses. Yet at the end of the day this game seems to be little more than a single player reskin of Mechwarrior Online, and that one was long in the tooth already by the time MW5 was released.

Canonically the various Mechwarrior groups absolutely do go for exotic color schemes and paint jobs.

On topic, I've gone back and given Angband another try. I was surprised how much it's changed in the five or so years since I last played, many new classes, entirely new spell lists, it's very different. I feel like it's a bit more monty haul though, not nearly as many cursed items and useless bait as I recall it having.

As I am without internet at home until Monday (thanks to an Edison pole upgrade) I cannot continue play the Lord of the Rings Online currently so I have returned to playing Battletech 2018, which is a most excellent game.

Battletech 2018? Has in - HBS Battletech? Yes, is a very good one. Just try with the latest BEX Mod - more nations, more mechs, and weapons, timeline extended up to 3057 - with clans. Comstar is also present - in a not good way - unless you want to collect SLDF / Royal mechs, LOL.
Is truly a new game.

I've been playing a lot of Cookie Clicker. Its addicting.

Went back into EU IV recently and put another 40 hours into the game, a decent amount of that in coop with a friend.

I also got the acclaimed The Forgotten City over Christmas Break, and finished it. I think its another example of how a competent writer can quite easily get a lot of acclaim for "excellent writing" in the video game space because of just how low standards are.
Don't get me wrong, its a good game, just not something that should be getting overwhelmingly positive reviews for its excellent narrative and having people say that it was one of the best written games of 2021.
