In this scenario an archeological dig team in Montana uncover a shocking find. While digging in a layer of soil dating back to the Late Permian they uncover an ancient metal beam. Shocked by their discovery they continue to dig for another two weeks and uncover the entrance to and ancient structure. Being curious they team enters and finds remains of what use to be a long abandoned military installation. They see strange writing that does not match any known human language and the skeleton of a being that looks like a bipedal Gorganapsid. Eventually word gets out about the find and makes international news. This happens before the US Government can cover the find up.
With no choice but to come clean. The US Government confirms the find is real and that it was not the first time such sites had been found in North America. They have been finding similar sites for the past 250 years all over the continent. But have been keeping them secret from all other world governments except for Canada, Argentina and Australia who have similar sites. They also come clean about 10 more never reported Apollo missions to the Moon that were to bring back artifacts from bases they found there. They state that this Race lived on Earth just before the Great Dying and that the event was caused by a way they had with an Extraterrestrial race. The end result of the war left them with no choice but to leave Earth and set out towards the stars.
