Presume he somehow gains these skills sometime after Willem Darry's death and felt disgusted at those he ended up killing in self-defence or not, he realises that things like wars lead not to just the deaths of soldiers and Lords but their families and the families of those unrelated as well
And reluctantly realises his father and brother were in the wrong and decides to just avoid the warring and murder

I'd think in-between the years of Willem Darry's death, the guy should have at the very least been accosted by bandits or random thugs
