I dunno. ROB makes them fight a bunch of berserk aliens for his amusement certainly sounds like a monster of the week situation.

You're missing a critical component to make it a normal monster of the week scenario: Main Characters. Without Kirk, Spock, or another named Gold or Blue shirt around (note: named Red shirted characters ARE NOT immune from Bad Stuff, both Uhura and Scotty had horrible things happen to them in TOS, Red Shirt > Main Character shields) Red Shirts don't have the proper mimetic situation to get them killed.

The Redshirts only have to live long enough to send out a distress signal to the Enterprise so they can investigate the mystery well after the fact.
