This is not to be confused with (Meta owned) Instagrams now defunct messaging service also called 'Threads' which was discontinued back in 2021.
And yes it seems to be considered as an alternative or competitor to Twitter by the developers at Meta including by the aforementioned Meta Executive Chris Cox whose leading this project.
Coding for this new platform began last January and Meta's Cox bragged celebrities ranging from the Dalai Lama of Tibetan game and Oprah Winfrey, the Dalai Lama equivalent of America, stated they'll join this platform.
It's planning on being launched through Instagram which already has a "billion" users and is expected to have improved interconnectability with Metas other major platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp and DeepState.
