Pete Duel
& DIANE Welsh: THEY'RE TRYING TO SAVE THEIR LOVE
by Will TusherMotion Picture, February 1972

We're all victims of habits, some of them pleasant and others not the least bit pleasant at all. Losing a habit that brought you joy can be just as painful as being unable to shake one that you detest. This tried and trying truth was recently revealed to pete , the stern and handsome star of the popular television series Alias Smith And Jones.

Upon first meeting pete Duel , you are not prone to believe that all of this will have a happy ending. The brooding silence of his face as he puffs and exhales on what, he will tell you, is only one of the cigarettes of a long, long day suggests a hopelessness and despair that, though speculative, seems well founded on his part. It is only through talking with him at length that you realize here is a man who will let nothing he believes in fall prey to defeat.

Nothing illustrates his strength of character and sincerity better than the history of his romance with Diane. They first became attracted to each other because of two idealistic concerns: ecology and health foods. Pete will still tell you that he finds it inconceivable to become emotionally involved with a woman less ecology motivated and aware than Diane. "I don't see how I could become interested in a woman who didn't give a damn about ecology. She would obviously be a very stupid woman or a very cruel woman with practically no sensitivity."

For ecology Pete comes on with the evangelical fervor of an Elmer Gantry. He assails public ignorance and apathy, government complacency and corporate ruthlessness with quixotic fervor. But he doesn't let this interest cripple his social life.

"I talk about it only if the subject comes up," Pete told me. "I don't walk into a room full of people and say: 'I've got a speech to make!' I like to have fun, too, for God's sake. Naturally, nobody likes a preacher at a party. But, as I said, if the subject does come up, as it often does in a normal conversation, it will hit a certain area. Then, very naturally, I'll say something either in reply to a question or a statement made. It all happens very naturally."

Pete readily affirms that their affection for one another, their sense of harmony, the comfortable and loving feeling they had together, all derived from their devotion to these two causes. In fact, they had many times operated as

A couple.

HE'S ALIAS SMITH OR ALIAS JONES--but either way it's not the image that seems to fit Pete Duel by Judy StoneTV Guide, May 15, 1971

In 1965, Peter Elstrom Duel had a private five-year plan. Five years in Hollywood to show his stuff, and then back to Broadway to name his price and his play. Instead he mushed through the goo of Gidget , suddenly whipped into political action and then subsided into a Zen Like meditation. .

Now he

stars as Hannibal Heyes in Alias Smith and Jones, ABC's new humorous Western series. Heyes is a wide-eyed safe-cracker in the dying days of the Old West. He wants to go straight, more or less, and win amnesty along with his pal, Ben Murphy. Murphy is the cool gun toter. One is alias Smith, the other alias Jones. Which is which doesn't really matter.Duel plays it Puckish, displaying his dimples.

Except that it's the wrong image for the real . Duel There's nothing either clipped like the new name or ingratiating like the new character about the introspective young man. He lived, until lately, in a state of congenial clutter in a $65-a-month, one-and-a-half room garage-top apartment in a middle-class Los Angeles neighborhood. [He has since moved to larger, more rustic and ramshackle quarters, but equally simple.--Ed.]

Duel is wary about interviews. "This is a part of the business I find amusing and also frightening," he says, pushing his straight, longish dark hair behind his ears. Wearing blue jeans and a blue-and-white T-shirt, he sits in an antique rocker, bare feet tucked under him. "There's a kind of reality to all this press-personality myth, but fame in show business is not in proportion to actual achievement. What happens so often is that things get out of sync."

Duel's determination to preserve a certain privacy shows when he introduces his girl, Diane.Welshrst name only, please, they both met on the set of Alias Smith And Jones. She is tall, slim, serene-looking, with long brown hair and a long, intelligent Modigliani face. She had been working as a TV producer's secretary when they met on location for The Alias Smith and Jone's set.

36th President of the United States: 1969 ‐ 1974

Remarks on Departure From the White House

August 09, 1974
Members of the Cabinet, members of the White House Staff, all of our friends here:
I think the record should show that this is one of those spontaneous things that we always arrange whenever the President comes in to speak, and it will be so reported in the press, and we don't mind, because they have to call it as they see it.
But on our part, believe me, it is spontaneous.
You are here to say goodby to us, and we don't have a good word for it in English--the best is au revoir. We will see you again.
I just met with the members of the White House staff, you know, those who serve here in the White House day in and day out, and I asked them to do what I ask all of you to do to the extent that you can and, of course, are requested to do so: to serve our next President as you have served me and previous Presidents--because many of you have been here for many years--with devotion and dedication, because this office, great as it is, can only be as great as the men and women who work for and with the President.
This house, for example--I was thinking of it as we walked down this hall, and I was comparing it to some of the great houses of the world that I have been in. This isn't the biggest house. Many, and most, in even smaller countries, are much bigger. This isn't the finest house. Many in Europe, particularly, and in China, Asia, have paintings of great, great value, things that we just don't have here and, probably, will never have until we are 1,000 years old or older.
But this is the best house. It is the best house, because it has something far more important than numbers of people who serve, far more important than numbers of rooms or how big it is, far more important than numbers of magnificent pieces of art.
This house has a great heart, and that heart comes from those who serve. I was rather sorry they didn't come down. We said goodby to them upstairs. But they are really great. And I recall after so many times I have made speeches, and some of them pretty tough, yet, I always come back, or after a hard day--and my days usually have run rather long--I would always get a lift from them, because I might be a little down but they always smiled.
And so it is with you. I look around here, and I see so many on this staff that, you know, I should have been by your offices and shaken hands, and I would love to have talked to you and found out how to run the world---everybody wants to tell the President what to do, and boy, he needs to be told many times--but I just haven't had the time. But I want you to know that each and every one of you, I know, is indispensable to this Government.
I am proud of this Cabinet. I am proud of all the members who have served in our Cabinet. I am proud of our sub-Cabinet. I am proud of our White House Staff. As I pointed out last night, sure, we have done some things wrong in this Administration, and the top man always takes the responsibility, and I have never ducked it. But I want to say one thing: We can be proud of it--5 1/2 years. No man or no woman came into this Administration and left it with more of this world's goods than when he came in. No man or no woman ever profited at the public expense or the public till. That tells something about you.
Mistakes, yes. But for personal gain, never. You did what you believed in. Sometimes right, sometimes wrong. And I only wish that I were a wealthy man-at the present time, I have got to find a way to pay my taxes--[laughter]--and if I were, I would like to recompense you for the sacrifices that all of you have made to serve in government.
But you are getting something in government-and I want you to tell this to your children, and I hope the Nation's children will hear it, too--something in government service that is far more important than money. It is a cause bigger than yourself. It is the cause of making this the greatest nation in the world, the leader of the world, because without our leadership, the world will know nothing but war, possibly starvation or worse, in the years ahead. With our leadership it will know peace, it will know plenty.
We have been generous, and we will be more generous in the future as we are able to. But most important, we must be strong here, strong in our hearts, strong in our souls, strong in our belief, and strong in our willingness to sacrifice, as you have been willing to sacrifice, in a pecuniary way, to serve in government.
There is something else I would like for you to tell your young people. You know, people often come in and say, "What will I tell my kids?" They look at government and say, sort of a rugged life, and they see the mistakes that are made. They get the impression that everybody is here for the purpose of feathering his nest. That is why I made this earlier point--not in this Administration, not one single man or woman.
And I say to them, there are many fine careers. This country needs good farmers, good businessmen, good plumbers, good carpenters.
I remember my old man. I think that they would have called him sort of a little man, common man. He didn't consider himself that way. You know what he was? He was a streetcar motorman first, and then he was a farmer, and then he had a lemon ranch. It was the poorest lemon ranch in California, I can assure you. He sold it before they found oil on it. [Laughter] And then he was a grocer. But he was a great man, because he did his job, and every job counts up to the hilt, regardless of what happens.
Nobody will ever write a book, probably, about my mother. Well, I guess all of you would say this about your mother-my mother was a saint. And I think of her, two boys dying of tuberculosis, nursing four others in order that she could take care of my older brother for 3 years in Arizona, and seeing each of them die, and when they died, it was like one of her own.
Yes, she will have no books written about her. But she was a saint.
Now, however, we look to the future. I had a little quote in the speech last night from T.R. As you know, I kind of like to read books. I am not educated, but I do read books--[laughter]--and the T.R. quote was a pretty good one.
Here is another one I found as I was reading, my last night in the White House, and this quote is about a young man. He was a young lawyer in New York. He had married a beautiful girl, and they had a lovely daughter, and then suddenly she died, and this is what he wrote. This was in his diary.
He said, "She was beautiful in face and form and lovelier still in spirit. As a flower she grew and as a fair young flower she died. Her life had been always in the sunshine. There had never come to her a single great sorrow. None ever knew her who did not love and revere her for her bright and sunny temper and her saintly unselfishness. Fair, pure and joyous as a maiden, loving, tender and happy as a young wife. When she had just become a mother, when her life seemed to be just begun and when the years seemed so bright before her, then by a strange and terrible fate death came to her. And when my heart's dearest died, the light went from my life forever."

John Volpe was now the frist italion president of the united states. He never planed to become president of the united staes he thought Nixon would serve out a full two terms but the Watergate scandal soon ended Nixon "s presidency.

President Volp"s first act was also his most controversial as he pardoned Richard Nixon.

His new vice president was Gerald Ford of Michigan . Soon after he took office, the 1974 midterms happened. next up for the helsinke accords and canceling eroupean visit for swine flu epidemic..
The choice to pardon Nixon was so unpopular, the Democrats won a massive landslide.

Governor sergent shriver campaigned across the country for Democrat candidates.senator Bayh also sought the Democratic nomination in 1976.

"Ted, this is the year. I can sense change in the eyes of America. I want to run.", Shriber said.

"You should watch out for what the world will throw at us.", Ted said.

"Theodore Roosevelt said that he was as strong as a bull moose. I too will never give up for America." Governor shriver wasn't the only one running. Volpe had only 2 years remaing of Nixons term and if he could win in 1976 he

would be ineligible to run again in 1980.that was ok with volpe he never planed to become president in the first place. in 68 volpe ran as a favorite son candidate merely to get the v.p

spot which he did over Spriro Agneew."I am sure glad i dont have your job vice president Ford told him one day having lunch with President Volpe. Many Republicans did not like President Volpe. Since his parden of Nixon casted a Dark shadow on the Republican party.
watergate had hurt many congressional and senator canidates in 1974 midterms in california Jerry Brown had defeated Houston Flourney to become next governor of Californian. Now he too was in 1976 primarry.
On the Democratic side.

Floureny had blamed Watergate for his loss. Nixon tried to encourage Connally to run, and Reagan was plotting a campaign too. On the Democratic side, Wallace was planning to try again as was Jerry "Moonbeam" Brown and Scoop Jackson.

While Wallace did well in South America, most Democrats coalesced around Governor Shriver , leading him to victory. Meanwhile, the Republicans were in chaos. Reagan and Volpe were throwing mud.
Now senator percy was running as well but blew up reporter when he talked his daughters scene in center fold girls

There was a brokered convention but Reagan did the most impossible deal since the Molotov-Ribbentrov Pact. Regan knew that the Republican would likely lose in 1976, so he knew that 1980 would be ripe for the taking.
Reagan ended up endorcing president Volpe in 1976.
President John Volpe narrowly won 1976 nomination against governor Reagan to run for his first full term.Volpe faced much controversy having pardoned Nixon. for many crimes during Watergate scandal

On the other side. James Earl Carter. Edmund Brown jr
Birch Evans bah fought for the 1976 Democratic presidential nomination. After Watergate they wanted an outsider and it looked like Carter could get it but the Humphrey campaign ran ad highlighting working to create the peace corps and putting together a civil rights bill ending segregation. At this time dr. Rev. Martin Luther king had passed and there were revival of the 60s time. vietnam had ended in cease fire with north and south Vietnam at peace. The economy was fair many political analysis experts believed president volpe had a halfway decent chance at getting elected.
The former senator ,from Minnesota pulled put a narrow win for nomination and picked his closest rival as running mate.

Things all turn out for the best in the end. Festus helps save the Pugh family's welfare, Av Marie and Toby get married and plan to leave for California, and Dibble even gets up from under his tree, but the rest of the Gunsmoke leads have nothing to do at all. Marshal Dillon (Arness), Doc (Milburn Stone), and Newly O'Brian (Buck Taylor) strangely only appear in a single scene, and for a show that was once titled Marshal Dillon, it feels a bit anticlimactic to choose a Festus-focused episode to end Season 20. But it didn't seem like even the show itself knew it was ending.

Marshal Dillon (James Arness) fires on 'Gunsmoke'

Reason_Why_Burt_Reynold_Gunsmoke_Role_Is_So_Small

"

CBS has done something Indians, bad guys, bad whisky and not even CBS could do earlier: Kill off U.S. Marshal Matt Dillon," the Associated Press wrote back in April 1975 (as noted by Greenland in The Gunsmoke Chronicles), just weeks after the lackluster finale aired. "A few years ago CBS tried to remove the show but was met by such audience protests that the network had to renew the series." Previously, star trek was cancelled to keep Gunsmoke on the air because then-CBS President William S. Paley and his wife were big fans of the Western drama. But this time around, there would be no eleventh-hour save, and the cancellation stuck. Gunsmoke evaporated from the air without a sound.
It was poetic justice perhaps because star treks very own "Captain Cristopher April. Jeff Hunter WAS THE LAST VILLAIN to have A shoot out
With Matt Dillon. so gunssmlke killed star trek then ended with Dillon shooting the caption of the u.ss. star ship constition skipper.

( Fantastic Journey )
The series concerns a family and their associates who charter a boat out into the Caribbean for a scientific expedition. After an encounter in the area of the Bermuda Triangle with an unnatural green cloud the group find themselves shipwrecked on a mysterious uncharted island from which they are unable to escape.
They encounter Varian (Jared Martin), initially disguised as an Arawak Indian, who is later revealed to be from the year 2230; a 23rd-century pacifist, musician and healer. Varian explains to the travelers that, like many before them including himself, they have been caught in a space/time continuum where people from the past, present, future and from other worlds are trapped, co-existing on the island in a series of timezones. The only way home can be found in a place called "Evoland" which lies "far to the rising sun" (it was indicated in interviews of the time that Evoland was also the name of the island itself). The only way to travel between timezones is via invisible gateways which instantaneously transport individuals or groups from one zone to another. In one episode "Beyond The Mountain" the group also encounters a second cloud which has much the same effect, but which also splits the group up.
After the initial pilot story, a steady group of travelers forms around Varian as de facto leader, and the series then follows this group as they travel across the many timezones of the island to find Evoland. On their way, they encounter people from different planets and times who are also trapped on the island and who have adapted to their plight in different ways. The pilot initially suggested the historical past would be explored; however, the producers of the show rapidly adopted a consistently futuristic tone during the series following pressure from the network. They also dropped three characters after the pilot as they wanted a more exotic group of travellers, hence the arrival of Liana and Willoway. Liana disappears from the last 2 episodes when Katie Saylor fell ill.
Although airing in a time when the nation's interest in the Bermuda Triangle, UFOs and fantasy was at a height, the show Varian (Jared Martin)"A man from the 23rd century possessing awesome powers". Varian generally uses a kind of crystalline 'tuning fork' device named the Sonic Energizer through which he focuses his thoughts into what is described as a sonic manipulation of matter. The device, is completely useless in anyone else's hands, and seems capable of a huge variety of tasks from opening doors to disrupting electrical systems to large scale acts of destruction, as well as its apparently intended function as a diagnostic and healing device. Following the departure of Professor Paul Jordan at the end of the pilot film, Varian takes over as de facto leader to the travellers and adopts a parental role over Paul's teenage son, Scott (most notable in episodes such as "An Act of Love" and "Turnabout").Scott Jordan (Ike Eisenmann)"The 13-year-old son of a famous scientist". Scott has an excellent knowledge of Earth history and events, but is still young and has a lot to learn.Dr. Fred Walters (Carl Franklin)"A young doctor just out of medical school"Lianna (Katie Saylor) who would in 2nd season be replaced by Kathy Lee Crosby.

Despite being canceled after only ten episodes. the producers decided to give the series a full 22 episode in the fall of 1978.Despite only 33 episodes of Fantastic Journey being produced retained cult status in syndication.

Ike Eisenman would go on to play Captain April"s son in star Trek 2 and 3.
but in the summer of 78, Eisenman was doing witch mountain. And quickly moved on from his fantastic Journey experience. I thought Eisenman told me as I interviewed him at world con 08. "I thought it would be ten episodes and that's it.I had no clue this would turn into a hit series loved by sci fi fans around the world.I like the fantastic journey comics put out by Gil Kane and Bill mantlo. The series may have had some clunkers but no worse then any other show.
" really enjoyed playing the mischievous Jonathon Willoway" said Norman Fell.

Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley ,the first Black politician to run for governor in 1982 had a strong lead in the polls. "My lead is very firm and I am very confident of victory," Bradley said of the

Oct. 24 California Poll by Mervyn Field that showed him still ahead, 47 to 41 percent."

Pete Duel would not be facing a incumbent like he did when he ran against John Tunney former senator of California who defeated Forsyth in the

1976 primary was who then went on to lose the general election to H. I Haysaka

Pete Duel had lunch with campaign manager ,his campaign manager
was his dear friend and Ganderfield co star Alan Alda.
They shared the same views on Ecology and politics

Crime was a major issue while Duel

Wanted to to focus on the environment and like Ronald Reagan had to explain to voters

why Californians should vote for a former actor with no prior election experience.

1982 was not all politics for Pete Duel wanted to marry Beth Griswold ,he even had the ring but after being married and divorced three years was scared to propose.

GEORGE Forsyth was the underdog I the 1982 primary race for governor. Since Edmund BROWN JR. WOULD NOT RUN FOR ATHIRD TERM BUT WAS RUNNIGN FOR SENATOR, Forsyth would not be facing a incumbent like he did with Tunney John Tunney former senator of California who defeated Forsyth in the 76 primary was John Tunney who lost the general election. Like the rocky films where Rocky's former opponent Apollo Greed trained Rocky to fight in rocky his rival in the third rocky installment. Tunney was giving Forsyth advice on how to win the governors election. John Tunney's farther was a boxer and election when polls were in the rivals favor or very close could seem as hectic as an actual fight.in 1976 Forsyth told his good friend Tunney like most politicians were full of it. Now 6 years later Forsyth was eating his words. Crime was a major issue while Forsyth Wanted to to focus on the environment and like Ronald Reagan had to explain to voters why Californians should vote for a former actor with no prior election experience. 1982 was not all politics for GEORGE Forsyth as he and his wife the former Beth Griwould Now Called Beth Forsyth gave birth to Candace Forsyth.
