Since this is an area that doesn't seem to get more attention, what would California (and the rest of the West Coast, for that matter) have looked like under Russian colonization without the Spanish/Mexicans being there? What happens if the US still exists & decides it wants that territory?
Russian colonization of Alaska

Russian colonization of Alaska
1848 - gold found in Caliphornia.
1849 - USA/Russia war over it.Russia could send army there and beat USA,what next? /they send their army to crush Hungary the same year - so,not much could be send. But USA have maybe 10 regiments, they would be defeated./

Would England and France support USA ,or Russia?
We could have Crimean war in Caliphornia, too.
But,if USA would be saved by brits, they would take something for it - for example,Oregon.
The same goes for french - maybe they take Alasca,or divide it between them and brits?
England in this scenario could keep Vladivostok.

The serious answer is that Russian colonistation would had looked identically to that of Alaska, Kamtchatka or Sakhalin - i.e. a few fur traders.
USA kicks them off, gold or no gold, because "sea to shining sea ... ".

Russia in 1848 had real army and Navy. They could hold Caliphornia,if tsar wonted it - and, after discovering gold,he would want it for sure.

And keep it till Crimean war, when England&France kick him out.
What next? english Caliphornia? french? maybe they give it to USA for sometching?

That army was in Europe and the navy was split between the Arctic, Baltic Sea, and Black Sea (and bottled up). They had no realistic hope of holding onto anything in the Americas if some other power said "Nope, that's ours. It's not yours." while laughing at Russia.

The US got California from Mexico in 1848 and granted it statehood in 1850. Russia objecting in this ATL would have been met with a pat on the head and a "Hush now, the adults are talking."

And USA do not have Navy on Pacyfic at all,and joke army.Russian would crush them there, unless England and France beat them.
Which would happen - in 1853.
So,Russian would lost their lands there - but,as result, never sell Alasca to USA.
Which could lead to white russian keeping both it and Siberia after 1920.
Unless Wall Street help reds to take over.Or FDR giving it to sralin, like he did with Poland in 1945.

P.S USA do not get Caliphornia from Mexico, but steal it.Robbery made by state is still robbery.
